North Enclosure, Manor House, Count's Yardham
The North Enclosure is the first enclosure of the Manor House entered from the town via the Town Gate. It contains the buildings required for the management of the Estate of the County of Herrir:
- Storage sheds for the ploughs and carts
- Byres and Kennels for the Manor's animals
- Barns and Granaries
- Tack Rooms
- Dovecotes, Avaries and Mews for the Manor's birds
The North Enclosure is connected to the rest of the Manor House via the Middle Gate.
Purpose / Function
Defensive ward for the Manor House, Count's Yardham.
Architecture
The ward was initially constructed of earth and timber, but it has been subsequently strengthened with stone facings and some projections now allow better protection of the wall base from within. It is not stonework of the same standard as the Town Gate - it looks much rougher and less well maintained.
The enclosure is over 170 paces from its northern most point to the Middle Gate and nearly 120 paces across at its widest.
