South Enclosure, Manor House, Count's Yardham
The South Enclosure is the more secure part of the defences of the Manor House, Count's Yardham. This part contains the Household's Gardens (There are two areas - A Kitchen Garden and a Physic Garden), a Well, and housing for the families of the more senior estate staff.
Purpose / Function
Defensive ward for Manor House, Count's Yardham.
Architecture
The ward was initially constructed of earth and timber, but it has been subsequently strengthened with stone facings and some projections now allow better protection of the wall base from within. It is not stonework of the same standard as the Town Gate - it looks much rougher and less well maintained.
The enclosure is about 100 paces from the Middle Gate to the south wall and nearly 120 paces across at its widest.
