Capric Vorcien
Capric Vorcien is a member of the Vorcien guild-family and the fourth of Stutd Vorcien's nine full-blooded children. He is a personal friend of Demir Grappo. However, he betrays Demir several times in secret. He is tall, thin with the black hair and olive skin of an Ossan native and a hawkish face. He has the Vorcien guild-family silic symbol tattooed on his right hand.
STORY
During Demir Grappo's military campaign against the Holikan rebels, he specifically brings Capric Vorcien with him to protect him. When Demir captures the city, Capric places the victory cloak over Demir's shoulders and gives him the honorary kiss on the cheek. Moments later, against Demir's wishes, the soldiers advance toward the city. Capric runs to find out what is happening, and when he returns, he explains that due to a gross miscommunication of Demir's orders, the colonels believe they have been commanded to sack the city. Secretly, Capric is the one who gave those orders in order to humble Demir and check his otherwise unimpeded career. This results in thousands of men, women, and children being slaughtered. Believing the massacre to be his own fault, Demir suffers from a mental breakdown. He tells Capric to write up his resignation letter to the Assembly and forge his signature on it. Then Demir flees into the provinces in self-imposed exile.
Nine years later, Capric finds Demir in Ereptia to deliver the bad news that his mother Adriana Grappo has been murdered. He also brings an offer to Demir from the Vorcien guild-family to take on the Grappo guild-family as clients. The arrangement would allow Demir to remain in the country while the Vorciens take control of all Grappo business affairs, but Demir sees the need to take over his mother's legacy. He wonders if the Vorciens have an ulterior motive for his possible return to Ossa. Demir asks Capric more about the Ossan politics that might have played a role in Adriana's death, so Capric explains that the Duke of Grent had been meddling in Ossan affairs for years by stealing trade contracts, bribing Ossan magistrates, and assassinating Ossan officers. Adriana's murder seems to be the latest of his schemes, so Ossa declared war on Grent to put an end to his bold affronts. Demir insists that his uncle Tadeas Grappo and his adopted brother Baby Montego also be informed of the news. Capric pales at the mention of Montego's name, but he assures Demir that the message has been sent, though Montego was last seen in the Glass Isles, so it may take months for him to return to Ossa. Capric also reassures Demir that no one remembers his role in the sack of Holikan because his mother worked tirelessly to get the military record and public story altered. On the way back, Demir asks Capric to borrow the enforcer services of his half-sister Kissandra Vorcien, intending to have her investigate his mother's murder.
Back in Ossa, when Demir tells Kizzie that Capric lent her to the Grappo guild-family, she finds it to be typical of her half-brother's pure business-like attitude toward her. When she visits the High Vorcien Club to investigate Glissandi Magna, Kizzie sees Capric there using dazeglass to numb himself while his companions talk around him. When her eldest brother Sibrial Vorcien comes after her to kill her, Kizzie knows Capric cannot come and save her because he is deep in his dazeglass trance. Luckily, she manages to escape by mentioning Baby Montego being back in town.
After the fire at Ivory Forest Glassworks, Demir sends Montego to talk with Capric, hoping the Vorcien would help to smooth things over with the Magna. Demir also borrows craftsmen from Capric to help shore up the dilapidated Fort Cundick.
During her investigation into Agrippo Stavri, Kizzie discovers that Agrippo had blackmailed Capric into helping kill Adriana. To figure out why, she sneaks into the Stavri family estate and finds that Agrippo had a copy of the orders to sack Holikan, written and signed by Capric himself. In his latest missive, Capric tells Agrippo that the deed was done, and he warns Agrippo not to contact him again. Knowing this is a dangerous political secret, Kizzie anonymously sends the missive to Demir, hoping he would strategically deal with Capric as Capric had done with him. However, the letter sets Demir into a rage, and he runs to the High Vorcien Club and accuses Capric in front of everyone. Under the influence of shackleglass, Capric admits to ordering the sack of Holikan in Demir's name. Declaring a blood-feud against Capric, Demir challenges him to a duel. Sibrial and Veterixi Jorn try to break up the fight, but both Capric and Demir insist on fighting to the death. Before they can kill each other, the Cinders arrive and arrest both of them. Demir realizes his mistake and regrets not having sought his revenge against Capric more tactfully. Father Vorcien tries to mitigate the blood-feud and public insult of the duel by proposing a marriage alliance between the Vorcien and the Grappo, where Demir would marry Kizzie. Demir begrudgingly agrees though he fully intends to renege on the deal.
