Shackleglass

Shackleglass is the light-green godglass that makes wearers obedient and truthful. Low-resonance shackleglass merely makes its wearers suggestible and honest, while high-resonance shackleglass forces wearers to obey any command and tell any truth, enslaving them mind and body. However, wearers can only speak the truth as they know it. High-resonance shackeglass also has the rare consequence of driving its wearer mad. An unwilling wearer might try to mentally struggle against shackleglass's sorcerous effects, twitching violently as their body attempts to fights its influence, but this takes incredible strength of will and usually does not work.   Shackleglass is often used to control convicts, prisoners, or even servants. Guild-families sometimes have their followers make oaths while touching shackleglass, though the effects are not long-lasting enough to truly compel their behavior after the oath is taken, yet it does have some psychological effect. Due to its powerful effects, it is illegal for use by civilians though the wealthy or powerful often find ways to access pieces of it.   STORY   Capric Vorcien explains to Demir Grappo that his mother's killer was subjected to shackleglass, but it drove him mad before he could explain anything of use. Demir later forces Capric to wear a shackglass earring and confess his involvement in the massacre of Holikan and Adriana Grappo's death. During their subsequent duel, Sibrial Vorcien and a traveler named Izzi volunteer to act as Capric and Demir's seconds, respectively, swearing on a piece of shackleglass to aid them.   Demir gives Kissandra Vorcien a piece of medium-resonance shackleglass to use in her investigation into his mother's murder because he wants confessions. To that end, she uses the shackleglass to question Churian Dorlani about his involvement, which he answers truthfully, though he fights against its power, even going so far as biting his own tongue to draw blood, but his body, as if bound by invisible ropes, willfully obeys. She later uses it on Glissandi Magna at the Lampshade Boardwalk, who tries to fight against it, an act which nearly gives her a seizure. To escape the shackleglass's effects and conceal her secrets, Glissandi bites off her own tongue.   Filur Magna puts a high-resonance shackleglass collar on Axio Darnasus to completely control him, giving him no opportunity to even respond to physical abuse. When Filur smears molten fearglass onto Axio's arm, causing excruciating pain, the shackleglass forces the young man's teeth to clamp shut when ordered to stay silent, despite the torture.   When Kizzie and Baby Montego capture Aelia Dorlani and question her, they threaten to use shackleglass if she does not speak truthfully. Fearing what state secrets she might spill under its influence, she complies.   Breenen Alvari keeps a small stash of shackleglass at the Hyacinth Hotel for business uses. When Tirana Kirkovik asks him for it to help her question Kempt about his sabotage at the Forge, he explains that he does not take the shackleglass out of the hotel, though it is more likely he does not want Kempt to make any admissions about the Glass Knife.
