Breenen Alvari
Breenen Alvari is the majordomo for the Grappo guild-family and the concierge at the Hyacinth Hotel. He served as a military surgeon with the Ossan Foreign Legion in his youth before transitioning to serve the Grappo sometime during Demir Grappo's childhood. During his time working for the Grappo, he also fell in love with Adriana Grappo and acted as her circumspect lover.
Breenen is a small man in his mid-fifties with mouse-like features, white Purnian skin, and short hair that had gone gray in his youth. He wears spectacles on the end of his nose.
STORY
When Demir Grappo returns to Ossa, he notices that Breenen Alviari looks like he aged twenty years since they last saw each other nine years ago. He acknowledges that Breenen's pains came from the fact that he mourns Adriana Grappo, who was both his employer and lover. Breenen reports that Adriana was buried in the Grappo family mausoleum next to Demir's father and that the Cinders confiscated all of her papers except for her death journal, which she personally instructed Breenen to save for Demir in the case of her untimely death. In the journal, she informs Demir that he can depend upon Breenen to help him with anything. After seeing the Yuglid face in the window, Demir asks Breenen if the hotel is haunted, which the majordomo seems to interpret as remaining evidence of Demir's mental breakdown.
Demir has several errands that he asks Breenen about, such as finding out where the Ironhorn Rams are stationed, paying for Kissandra Vorcien's investigation, searching for Ulina Magna, and looking for the Tall Man.
When rioters in the Assembly District come close to the Hyacinth Hotel, Thessa Foleer asks Breenen to give her the hotel's forgeglass reserves to pass out to them. He refuses at first, but she promises to make more. After the rioters leave, Breenen scolds her for almost getting people killed, but Demir tells him to leave Thessa alone.
Later, when Thessa brings Pari on as her assistant, Breenen makes her swear her loyalty to the Grappo on a piece of shackleglass when she becomes their client, though Thessa reminds Pari that she works for her, not for Breenen. After the Dorlani agents break into the hotel to try and steal the phoenix channel, Breenen and Tirana Kirkovik add security to the hotel.
When helping Thessa coordinate with craftsmen to build the phoenix channel Breenen discloses to her that his only wish is to ensure the survival of the Grappo guild-family, which would be his legacy. Thessa later learns the full meaning of those words after she moves her phoenix channel experiment to the Forge. Tirana discovers a potential traitor in their midst after an enforcer named Justaci accidentally dies after disclosing that the basement door was unlocked during the Dorlani attack on the Hyacinth Hotel. Tirana and Thessa then catch another enforcer named Kempt with flare residue on his fingers. When they ask Breenen for shackleglass to question Kempt, the majordomo insists that he never takes it out of the hotel. When Captain Hellonian arrives after following the signal flare, he shows his Glass Knife tattoo to Thessa, ordering her surrender. When she refuses, Breenen betrays Thessa by having his loyal enforcers turn on the group, resulting in a short skirmish. Then Breenen turns Thessa and the phoenix channel over to Captain Hellonian. He explains that he made a deal with the Glass Knife, who promised to leave the Grappo unharmed in exchange for the phoenix channel, and Captain Hellonian promises that Devia Kerite will honor the terms of their agreement. Breenen then helps to stich up the Grappo enforcers who were wounded in the skirmish. When Thessa questions Breenen about why he betrayed Demir, he reveals that he had helped Adriana root out the Glass Knife, even infiltrating their ranks for her, but that only resulted in getting her killed. He knew the Glass Knife was too powerful, so Demir's legacy depended on working with the Glass Knife rather than against them, especially since Demir was too volatile and fragile, a fact proven by his duel with Capric Vorcien. Thessa tries to distract Breenen by accusing him of killing Adriana, which allows her to unground the phoenix channel. When he does notice, he draws his gun on Thessa, Pari, and Tirana. He shoots Tirana and Thessa, but a lightning bolt then strikes the phoenix channel, disintegrating Captain Hellonian and his dragoons. After the blast, Breenen and his enforcers steal the phoenix channel for the Glass Knife. Tirana and Thessa promise that they will get the phoenix channel back and skin Breenen and his enforcers alive.
