The Forge
The Forge is a storm-prone series of cliffs a dozen miles northwest of Ossa. Thunderstorms often crash against the cliffs, making booming sounds that sounds like artillery fire, which can be heard miles off. The Forge has several interesting tall rock formations as well as an abandoned lighthouse with a partially destroyed roof. Below it lie some scrubland between the Forge and Harbortown.
PLOT
In order to power her phoenix channel, Thessa Foleer moves her research operation to the Forge, hoping to capture a lightning bolt and find a safer place for her experiments than the Hyacinth Hotel. On the way to the Forge, a saboteur pushes one of the Grappo enforcers named Justaci off the cliff to her death. Tirana Kirkovik then finds evidence that the saboteur is signaling someone in the Grent army using a military flare hidden behind a boulder. This flare alerts Kerite's Drakes to their location, and soon Captain Hellonian along with about a hundred of his dragoons appears and orders Thessa and her party to surrender. When Captain Hellonian reveals himself to be a member of the Glass Knife, Breenen Alvari and his loyal enforcers turn their guns on Thessa, Tirana, and Pari, capturing them. In an effort to escape, Thessa untethers and aims the phoenix channel right at Captain Hellonian and the dragoons just as lightning strikes the lighthouse. The phoenix channel converts the lightning bolt into an energy beam, which disintegrates the dragoons in a flash of blinding light. It also blasts an immense valley-like furrow through the cliffs, cutting a jagged crag from the door of the lighthouse for more than a mile across the scrubland, forever changing the Forge's landscape.
During his battle against Devia Kerite, Demir Grappo hears the deafening blast and sees the Forge lit up with molten, smoldering rock that glows orange as the storm moves past it. He worries that no one survived the blast but uses it to his advantage by pretending the sound comes from an Ossan super weapon located at the Forge.
