Terror birds and caustic butterflies are not the only animal used as political symbols or important statements. We've also come up with a very fun one...

What

A completely ridiculous race of chicken. Big, awkward, ugly, and very very stupid.   They have always been a subject of mockery for Nélanniens, but they have never been a big source of food given that they taste terribly and their meat is very hard.   Even poor people avoided them as much as they could.

Symbol

Since the Dark Lords have their terror bird symbol, the Dark Society thought it would be only fitting for the Light Lords to have an animal symbol too.   And since they did not themselves appear interested, Dark mages took the initiative of assigning them one.   A very dignified bird for very dignified people.

Hunt

The Dark mages used the new symbol to make fun of the Light Lords.   To increase drama, they hunted the wild chickens in spectacular rituals that culminated with the birds being roasted above a bonfire and consumed to symbolise the Dark's eventual victory over the Light and their absorption of the Light Lords' magic.

Ridiculous chicken

Where

The chickens used to be native to Nélannie. They were left in the wild because of their bad taste and poor nutritive content.   When the ritual hunts against them started, they were slowly driven to extinction.   Nowadays, the last few specimens are being kept in a few hidden farms owned by Dark mages.

Population

It was never very high given how weak the chicken are, never reaching beyond the 50,000.   Nowadays, it's rumoured that only between 10-20 individuals of all ages are left.   Well below sustainable level for the species, but who care when the Dark Lord is going to win soon and the ritual hunts won't be necessary anymore?

Reaction

Light society came to learn of the ritual hunts and of how they were being insulted. Unsurprisingly, this made them furious.   They refused to embrace their new symbol but nevertheless passed laws to attempt to protect the population of wild chicken.   This was completely inefficient, so instead they doubled their effort to make the terror birds extinct too.

Cooking practice
The chickens taste terrible, but they needs to be eaten without hesitation at the end of the ritual hunt. Since each ingredient added in the ritual needs to be careful chosen and symbolically significant, a recipe has been elaborated to make the chickens more palatable:
  • a hint of highly diluted caustic butterfly powder to symbolise the Light treachery (and to melt the meat),
  • salt from the thermal springs of the magic-filled Garna Forest,
  • crimson rhubarb jam for its link to light and so to Light magic,
  • honey from the royal hives to symbolise the subjection of the government.
  •
Rumours are that since the war will start soon, a new ritual hunt is going to be called. Only the Dark Lord and his most faithful followers gets to partake, so I need to find a way to get an invitation...

Wow! You need caustic butterfly powder (even if highly diluted) to melt the meat? That is a touch bird!   I love the snarky comment about "the light didn't appear themselves, so we had to pick for them...)

Thanks :D Yes, very a terribly tough meat, but the Dark mages were really motivating with sticking to their choice of symbol despite all the troubles XD

Thanks :D Terror birds were real animals that are now extinct, but yes they're in the family of cassowary and ostrich but were bigger and meaner XD They're from 50-0.1 millions years ago.
