Guild notice—Guidelines on the handling of caustic butterfly

Following a series of "pranks", the Lady Director of the rune guild has ordered the re-issue of the guidelines concerning caustic butterfly. All guild members are required to read, remember and follow them, whether you are involved in their harvest from the Garna Forest, their storage in the guild building, their use in experiments, and even if you have no official interaction with them at all.

What

Species: Carnivorous butterfly, wings covered in a caustic substances used to melt prey.   Colours: Dark bluish purple.   Substance: Gain caustic chemical by swallowing the deposits of thermal springs.   Hunting: It flutters above a prey and the powdery substance falls on them. It can also trap a surface & wait for a prey to touch it.

Ecology

Population: Lives in groups of 100s individuals called flutters.   Habitat: Shadowed areas near thermal springs.   Roosting: Rests attached under the leaves of feisty lettuce.   Food: Usually spiders & small rodents, during mating season comes in big flutter to hunt medium-size mammals like deers & humans.

Uses

Alchemy: Crushed wings or gathered caustic powder used in alchemy to give materials special magical properties.   Rituals: Use a whole butterfly in rituals for symbolism.   Jewellery: Whole butterfly or its wings used as decorations as a symbol of hidden powers or danger—especially popular with children or adults perceived as "delicate".

Risks

Corrosive through touch & inhalation
Flammable
Explosive

Safety

Avoid all skin contact and inhalation.   Handle with gloves, safety googles, and lab coat.   Keep a ward around the powder to avoid small particles getting in the air and people's lungs or on their skin.   Always clean work surfaces properly.

Storage

Keep in glass bottles—the corrosive chemical will melt through other materials.   Properly label your storage bottles and all glassware used to contain the corrosive chemical during experiments.   Keep the corrosive chemical away from sunlight—long exposure will make it catch fire and explode.

Conclusion: Any rune master found casually handling such a dangerous substance will be summarily dismissed. The guild has far better things to do than to summon healers every week to regrow lungs, and it will not suffer the humiliation of having its esteemed guests fall prey to those so-called pranks.

Thanks :D YEs some people see a deadly substance and their first thought is to have "fun" with it D: Or at least, that's what they say when they get caught...

And now its Amelies turn. Caustic Butterflies. Amelie I just got off work and now you introduce me to a creature that is in fact a flying OSHA violation. I was not prepared for this!!   Love them, I love them so much, well done :)

Thanks XD   Well, people don't normally bring back live butterflies home, so they're not supposed to put their caustic substance all over your work place :p If you do find some, it's either the results of your own incompetence or a "prank" by your colleagues...

Carnivorous butterfly! And they will swarm to eat people! Way cool! This reminds me of the carnivorous fairies in Pan's Labyrinth. I really can't blame Madame de Nivers on this one. These are definitely something people shouldn't play around with.   When it says "whole butterfly" in jewelry, is this the actual butterfly, or a depiction of it (if the former, who do they keep the wearer safe? Unless that's not the point...)

Thanks for the comment :D   The "whole butterfly" does mean a killed and preserve butterfly body. They prepare it in different way, like adding a layer of protective polish around it, so that they caustic substance cannot hurt the wearer, although I imagine some people would delight into knowing that their butterfly is different from others and still dangerous XD

This has got to be one of the most creatively and stunningly laid-out articles I've read for this prompt. I love the choice of a circle. I love that you're presenting the whole thing as a kind of reminder pamphlet to be handed out to people. And I love the creature itself, which feels like a terrific take on the butterfly.

Thanks a lot <3 It took some tricky css to get those circle to work, but now that I have them, I'm putting them everywhere XD I've been having fun with those pamphlet- style articles. It doesn't allows me to mention absolutely everything about a topic, but to be fair I'm very rarely using all that info in novels anyway :p

I just wonder who thought that it was a good idea to make pranks using something with That list of risks.... Did they really didn't know?

Sep 29, 2023 11:39 by Amélie I. S. Debruyne

Well, I'm sure to some people the dangers and bad consequences are what mad ethe "pranks" fun XD   But I have 2 more reasonable explanations: 1) with healing magic easily available to rich people, injuries are not viewed as something as bad as it would be for us; 2) some of those were not pranks at all, but bad bullying with the pranking used as a convenient excuse.   Thanks for the comment :D

Oh, I hadn't considered the first reasonable explanation. The other two... yeah, I guess, a little XD
