Table of Contents

For several centuries, our country has been divided between Light and Dark politics. As the relationships between politicians and their families have embittered, so has society. We now stand as two separate communities that never mix and hate each other, and the Light grabbing power and outlawing anything Dark will never manage to cow us into disappearing! Especially now that we have a new leader around whom to gather and in whom to place all of our hopes...

Dark Society

All mages in support of Dark magic—or simply in opposition to the principles of Light politics—gather together, whether simply to nurse our complaints or practice our traditions that have now been outlawed.
Socialising
Balls, balls, and even more balls.   Balls are the perfect occasion to catch up with old acquaintances, gossip, rant about terrible Light mages, while also dancing and courting each other to forge alliances and marry off reluctant offspring.   All very innocent, of course.
Religion
Our oldest religious practices and rituals have all been outlawed, but how can we afford to stop them when this would bring out the complete collapse of society and undoubtedly the end of all life on earth?   Just listen to the priests, and they will tell you all about it and what will happen if you don't pay the tithes.
Politics
From electing a Dark Lord, participating in his court, debating how to counter Light's propaganda and political manoeuvring, to outright scheming a revolution.   Involves a lot of back-stabbing to rise in the Dark Lord's estime and in the ranks of his followers.
Magical practice
From social salons organising group readings and simple spell practices to outright duelling tournaments.   We have a duty to keep the knowledge and experience of our magic and to fight against the Light's attempts to erase them. We also all need to be fully prepared for when the revolution will finally start...

The darker aspects

Our meetings are technically "underground" but not exactly secret, This is making all Light mages completely paranoid about what we get up to when away from their sights. But so long as nobody is caught in an illegal act, the government cannot prosecute us as it has to keep up the appearance of fairness and justice.   And because the Dark welcomes so many forbidden practices and refuse any constraint on magic, it has unfortunately become a haven for criminals and those only looking for a chance to cause troubles and let free their sadistic impulses...
Unethical activities
Nepotism, bribes, blackmail, thefts...   Nothing more than expected and nothing to truly complain about. You can't do a revolution without getting your hand dirty after all!   And for all that they may pretend, the Light isn't any better than us on this point...
Immoral activities
Unsavoury sex rituals, human sacrifices, cannibalism, necromancy...   The Dark has been fighting to maintain our knowledge and experience of rituals, but unfortunately, very little difference is made between harmless and life-saving rituals and the more horrifying ones.
Dangerous magic
There are always some outrageously reckless ritual magic 2 seconds away from running out of control and causing a disaster. Again.   Far too many people have the arrogance to think they can control uncontrollable rituals—or lack the sanity to care about getting everyone killed...

Because of all of this, joining Dark gatherings is never without dangers, and you can never be sure that you'll be able to get home with quite all of your fingers, but isn't that part of their charm?

Somehow this makes dark culture seem quite nuanced with *some* bad actors, but I don't know if the writer is a little biased. :P

Yes Alina is not really objectives :D However, we're going to follow her through the novel so her POV is the only one that counts :p Thanks for the comment :D

Looks like the dark talks about the light the same way the light talks about them. Go figure. I like how many times I've seen the word *again* in reference to the runaway magic.   Possible typo: Under politics you have "dark lord lord."

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .

Thanks and thanks for pointing out that typo!   Having not one but two catastrophe destroy/nearly destroy a city does leave a trace XD

"There are always some outrageously reckless ritual magic 2 seconds away from running out of control. Again." This made me laugh so much. Great article. It was interesting to see how the Dark mages view the Light ones and how they view their own culture.

Lilliana Casper   I don't comment much, but I love reading your articles! Please check out my worlds, Jerde and Tread of Darkness.

Thanks :D I've been having fun playing with the perceptions and the POV from which I'm writing all those articles to show the oppression my poor Dark mages suffer and how they're totally justify with their "revolution" :p

A great read as always, funny and I love the in-world voice and layouts you've been using for the Seduction Plan. Poor misunderstood dark-siders being repressed as ever... :-D. I've added this one to my SC Reading challenge for this category too BTW... it'll be published sometime soonish I hope.

I was feeling sorry for them, but then you get to the bit with human sacrifice and cannibalism! On those points, I tend to agree with the Light side!

Pfff, for such little details? You have to recognise that making double use of your enemies is clever :p   Thanks for your comment XD
