Kontelezh Aleth

Structure

The County of Aleth is a feudal state, sworn to the Duchy of Letha. Unlike the hierarchical divisions found in the Penn-ar-Bed, there is no Kont of Aleth, but rather three powerful nobles that oversee their own sovereignties and are sworn to the Dug. The three main divisions are as follows:
  • The Barony of Porhoet is the largest, but least populated, region of the country is. Deep in the ar Goat, this is a Fair County, and heavily forested. The Brekilien forest covers most of the area, except for some small towns in the South, where is borders the Oud River at Josilin. Its border with the Lordships of Loudeig and Mene follow the Ninian River, a tributary of the Oud. Its northern Border is the Gravelles River.
  • The Viscounty of Daoudour stretches from the Gravelles River to the ar Mor Breizh. The Froudveur River separates it from Pentevr, while the Renk River makes its Eastern edge.
  • The Barony of Clos-Poulet is a small region, located on the East bank of the Renk and the ar Mor Breizh. The Corsair city of Aleth is located here.
  • Public Agenda

The County of Aleth is a land divided. The Corsair City of Aleth, sometimes called the City of 100 Kings, is largely populated by sailors and merchants, each valuing profit and individual freedom over the larger struggles of noble power. At present, through the manipulations of House Frihep, the Staunchist cause has a slight majority in the Captain's Council and the position of Baron. Dinan, however, is heavily involved in these politics, with House Frihep backing the Staunchist claim of Janed "Ar Gammez" Pentevr on the ducal throne.   In the South, the The Brekilien League has its strongholds, actively confronting the will of Dinan, largely uniting behind the Monforz claim. Only the town of Josilin and its rulers, House Roc'han buck this tend the Southern barony.

    Demography and Population

The Barony of Clos-Poulet is the most populous of the three regions within the County, mostly centered on Aleth itself. Bediz, Jetins Kriores, Fées-des-Houles, Poulpiquet, Tuatha de Danaan, Tempestarii and Fomorians make their home here in large numbers.   The town of Dinan, in the Viscounty of Daoudour, is largely Bediz, having expelled the Korrigan from the intra-muros town. The rural areas to the South are populated by the Teuz and Poulpiquet.   In Southern Porhoet, the Korrigan hold the stronghold of the Goat Brekilien. Kornikaned, Gargantuan Kriores, Poulpiquet and Teuz greatly outnumber the Bediz in this region. Only the town of Josilin holds a slight Bediz majority. The nearby Kriores capital of Ker-Malastred is just over the border in Gwened likely stretches deep into this territory.

    Territories

The County is best described as tall and narrow, three regions stacked along a North-South axis from Ker-Malastred to Aleth. In the south, the Barony of Porhoet begins at the Oud River, where the town of Josilin sits on the rocky gorges overlooking the wide, slowmoving waterway. The Brekilien Forest springs up to the North, quickly growing tall and dense, taking up the majority of the interior. The forest is high and hilly. To the West, the Mene foothills rise into the Meneziou Are. The Ninian river, flowing into the Oud, creates the division with the Fair Counties of Pentevr.   Across the Gravelles River to the North, the region becomes hilly once more as Renk River reaches the Torgennou Begerel, dividing the Renk Basin from the Roazhon Basin to the East. The forest becomes less dense as one moves North towards the coast, the blanket of green replaced by copses and bocage. In the Northeast, the Barony of Clos-Poulet sits of a rocky plateau over the Marais de Dol and the Pleg-Mor Menez-Mikael.

    Military

The military of the County varies wildly across the region. In Porhoet, the Korrigan Troupes, such as the Gargantuan Kriores or the Brekliien Kornikaned operate as militias, controlling their interests in the region. The economic powerhouse of Dinan, in contrast supplements its military forces with Brassgaurd and the mercenary Free Companies, such as The Tards-Venus. In Aleth, military power is largely made up of dozens of independent sailing companies, mercenaries and a small garrison under the Baron. All together, Aleth supports one of the most powerful fleets in Letha, but it is prone to fracturing due to its decentralized nature.

    Religion

Despite the preference of the nobility in the region, and its proximity to Church strongholds, there is a large druidic population, both in Porhoet, where is makes a sizeable majority, and Aleth.

  • Currency
Like most of Letha, the County uses the Livre Tournois, but does not mint its own currency, instead relying on the mints of Roazhon and Dreger.   In the Corsair City, the Livre is widely accepted, but the Florin, Ducat and Guilder are widely accepted from far off traders. A lucrative money-changing industry has sprung up on the city.
    Legislative Body
The legislation of the County is controlled by three parties: The Nobility, the Church and the Counsel of Captains.
  • The Nobility is headed by the Barons of Porhoet, the Biskonts of Daoudour and the Barons of Clos-Poulet typically create and execute the laws, often in furtherance of those set by the Dug or the Estates of Letha. The will of the Estates, so close in nearby Roazhon, hold great sway here.
  • In Aleth, the Council of Captains operate in a semi-democratic society. Ownership of a ship above a certain tonnage confers a seat in the counsel, with each ship equal to one vote. Despite the name, ship captains are not given a seat on the counsel unless they are also the owners of their vessels. Certain entities, such as powerful guildmasters and merchant princes, are given representation on the council as well, waiving the ship-owner requirement for important landbound industries. The Chairman of the Counsel, with an overriding vote is the Baron of Clos-Poulet.
