Episode 6: Grinning Ambush

General Summary

The party stood over Athyen's ruined body within his cell at the Temple of Valkur. Ceona curses at his body and begins tossing his cell in search of incriminating evidence, and the others join in as well. After searching his rather bare cell, the party fails to find anything of note. Feadog wonders why he wanted to kill himself. Celindriel agrees that it doesn't seem to be a rational decision. Kasek, not wanting to hang around, suggests they leave. As they make their way back outside, Celindriel closes and locks the door behind them.

8:45 PM - 8th of Vlaihr, 2272

The party arrives back at the Hirane Town Guard Barracks and find Berny Page anxiously pacing within his office. Berny eagerly asks for any information they may have uncovered. The party informs Berny about what happened between them and Athyen, of Athyen's suicide, and shows him the emblem they found on the corpse.

Berny examines it, but is unable to identify it. He suggests the party show it to someone more versed in Religious or possibly Demonic studies, and tosses the emblem back to them to keep. The party also shows Berny the vials they recovered from Athyen's body, along with the dagger he used to kill himself. Berny confiscates the vials and the dagger, placing them within his desk drawer.

The party begins to worry that the criminals are going to become aware of the party's actions with both Rilanor and Athyen now dead. Kasek suggests that the party acts and assault the Warehouse or the Waterwitch, but both Berny and the party are somewhat reluctant. Berny suggests that perhaps they just wait and see what happens. With Rilanor and Athyen out of the picture, perhaps Sylrith and Tela will get sloppy, and may slip up. Berny theorizes that Lord Andel Caldel is involved, and perhaps in an attempt to get direction on what to do, Sylrith or Tela might tip their hand and attempt to contact Lord Caldel.

Berny then suggests that he uses his two trustworthy guards to keep an eye on Tela or Sylrith, or on any of the various locations within town. The party muses it over a moment before Celindriel speaks up saying that regardless of what is done, they currently have two bodies on their hands. Berny tells the party to bring Rilanor's body to the Barracks, and he'll place him within a cell. In the meantime, Berny decides to leave Athyen where he is in his cell. At least no one would be coming upon him within the immediate future. Kasek turns and immediately leaves the Barracks to head towards the Grinning Kobold Inn.

Kasek Meets the Wolfhound

As Kasek exits the Barracks, he is immediately met by a rather large dog -- a Wolfhound. The dog surprises Kasek given the fact they are approximately the same height. The dog is not threatening and makes motions to play with Kasek, but Kasek is in a hurry to collect the body from the Grinning Kobold. He side-steps the dog and enters the lobby of the Inn to find Drossa Diggle sitting at the front desk. Having forgotten that he would have to deal with her, he concocts a story that he's back from the What Ales You Tavern, and is tired. He asks if Drossa would be willing to collect some dinner for him and Levkaria since he's just too sleepy to get it himself. She admits that she could, and her body language gives Kasek the impression she's looking for incentive. He offers to trade her a shot of his whiskey in exchange for her fetching him dinner. Drossa produces two shot glasses from beneath her desk, he pours, and they both share a drink. She admires the brew and offers some constructive criticism, and then agrees to head out to collect his dinner. She exits out the front of the Inn, and Kasek hears her scream shortly thereafter. He looks out the front door to see her timidly avoiding the rather massive dog (compared to a Halfling). Eventually she makes it past the dog and starts running to the Inn.

Feadog, having realized Kasek will probably need help bringing Rilanor down the stairs, decides to leave the Barracks and head to the Inn. He comes out in time to see Drossa running off and is also surprised by the large dog, but makes his way into the front of the Inn. They make their way upstairs and collect the wheelbarrow containing Rilanor's body, and as they roll him towards the top of the stairs, they knock on Levkaria's door. Kasek informs her to keep an eye out for Drossa to return, and if Drossa attempts to come up with Kasek's dinner, Levkaria is to intercept her and tell Drossa that he doesn't want to be disturbed. She agrees and heads back into her room.

Kasek walks backwards down the stairs bearing the load of the wheelbarrow while Feadog attempts to guide it. They manage the effort quite easily aside from Feadog accidently pushing the wheelbarrow up against the wall scraping Kasek's knuckles. Once on the ground floor, they continued out the front of the Inn to find the dog had moved on and was nowhere to be seen. After looking around a moment for the animal, they made their way with the wheelbarrow to the Barracks.

While waiting for Kasek and Feadog to return, Celindriel and Ceona attempt to make small talk with Berny. Celindriel begins asking if Lord Andel Caldel has been known to be overly friendly with his female staff. Ceona also asked if it was a common thing for female employees to rotate frequently through the manor. Berny admits Lord Caldel doesn't have many women on his staff, and he doesn't see Lord Caldel as being the womanizing type. The only incident he has had with female employees is an incident involving an ornery female dwarven chef who only lasted a week before leaving, but that was due more to her temperament as an individual. Celindriel and Ceona both decide to leave the matter alone and wait patiently for Kasek and Feadog to return.

Kasek and Feadog arrive with the wheelbarrow, and Berny leads them into a room off to the left of the front entrance. The room contains six prisoner cells, and Berny indicates to Feadog and Kasek to place Rilanor in the furthest cell, leaving him in the wheelbarrow. Berny locks the door, and returns with Kasek and Feadog to join Celindriel and Ceona in his front office. The party and Berny discuss their next move, and the party decides to have Berny post one guard at Rilanor's House that is to keep a watch on House Caldel. They also decide to have one guard keeping an eye on Sylrith's House. The party agrees to watch the Warehouse from a room within the Grinning Kobold Inn. Kasek asks if they could have one of the vials of the dark brown substance since it is obviously a toxin, and if there is a chance that they could be attacked by enemies using poisoned weapons, this could potentially level the playing field. After getting some reassurances, Berny agrees and gives Kasek one vial of the dark brown liquid. Berny wishes them good luck, and he'll see them in the morning. The party then makes their way back to the Grinning Kobold Inn, with Kasek letting the other members enter first.

They find Drossa Diggle sitting at the front desk, and the party begins making small talk. Ceona purchases the room next to Kasek's for the evening, telling Drossa that Celindriel snores and she needs a separate room. Drossa agrees and charges her 5 sp for the room. While doing this, Kasek decides to sneak in and hide behind the party as they speak with Drossa. Drossa hands Ceona a bowl of stew she collected from the What Ales You Tavern, and after Ceona thanked her, the party began to head upstairs with Kasek sneaking along with them. Once upstairs, Ceona and Levkaria decide to turn in and go to sleep. Feadog remains awake for a time practicing with his pan flute, and eventually goes to bed himself. Kasek keeps watch out his bedroom window which looks out onto the backside of the Warehouse, and Celindriel decides to enter into her meditative trance while in Ceona and Levkaria's room. During her trance, she has a strange experience (See Celindriel's Dreams - Dream 1 - Night of the 8th of Vlaihr, 2272).

Ambush

Celindriel wakes up from her trance, a little surprised and startled. Kasek knocks on the door and indicates to Celindriel that it's her watch. Celindriel makes her way to the new room they had rented from Drossa (center room on the south of the building) and keeps an eye on the warehouse which is visible through the room's window. She begins her watch as Kasek makes his way back to his room, locks his door, and falls asleep. With the time now roughly being 2:30 AM, Celindriel hears the wooden stairs creak outside her room. She begins to sneak out of her room to investigate but steps on a warped plank of wood that creaks loudly. She overhears a man hushing someone coming from the stairs, and after a moment's pause, she begins to hear more whispering. Celindriel immediately ducks into Feadog's room, closes the door, and rushes over to wake him up. As he comes to, both of them hear the stairs creak again outside. Celindriel and Feadog draw their weapons and take a position behind the closed door.

Meanwhile, Ceona wakes up after hearing the door to her room creak open. She immediately grabs her shield and weapon, and stands on the end of her bed, ready for battle while Levkaria continued to sleep. Celindriel attempts to open the door to Feadog's room to see what is happening in the hallway. She spots a rather large Thug, along with two Hirane Town Guard -- Gilson and Liam -- standing at the top of the stairs messing with Ceona's door. They spot Celindriel peeking through the door and yell out "Hey! They're in the other room!". At this point, the party rolled initiative and battle ensued.

Grinning Kobold 2nd Floor by SirElghinn

The party is successful in defeating the Thug and the Town Guards, and even manage to keep the enemies alive through successful medicine checks and healing. Celindriel admits to the party that she's not the best at medicine since she typically only works with dead people, which draws raised eyebrows from the group. Drossa Diggle arrives upstairs wielding two daggers and looking to join in the fray. Ceona tells her everything is under control, but asks if Drossa has any rope. Drossa immediately runs back downstairs in search of rope while the others continue to stabilize the enemies and Ceona checks in to make sure Levkaria is healed and ok. The front door of the Inn opens, and up rushes Berny Page and his two trustworthy guards. Berny asks if the party is ok as he was worried about their safety after hearing noises from next door. Relieved, he listens to what happened from the party, and is impressed that they managed to keep their enemies alive this time. Drossa reappears with rope and eagerly assists in helping the party and Berny tie up the hostiles. The two trustworthy guards carry Gilson and Liam back to cells in the Barracks, and Berny asks Kasek to give him a hand carrying the Thug. Kasek quickly rifles through the Thugs belongings, finding 1 gp 36 sp, which he pockets along with taking one mace with Berny nodding his approval saying "You've certainly earned it". Kasek and Berny then carry the Thug back to the Barracks. Each are placed within their own individual cell within the Barracks, and the party gathers in Berny's office.

The party begins wondering if the individuals they just defeated would have any information useful to their investigation. Kasek convinces Feadog to volunteer in taking point on the interrogation due to his charming personality. Berny tells the party they might as well head back to bed as the three prisoners will more than likely be unconscious for a few more hours. In the meantime, he'll have his two trustworthy guards positioned in the lobby of the Grinning Kobold Inn to allow the party to sleep without worrying about another ambush. The party agrees and heads back to the Grinning Kobold Inn.

Back at the Inn, they find Drossa Diggle upstairs scrubbing the blood from the floor of her establishment. Surprisingly, she's upbeat and excited and not at all upset. She tells the party how amazed she is at their abilities and how she wishes she could have helped. She explains this is the most excitement she's had since moving to Hirane from Ambermoor in the Territory of Aldwynne. She explains she moved with her parents, but her father didn't make it during the journey. Her mother raised her within the Grinning Kobold Inn, and her mother passed the Inn along to her when she died about 5 years ago. Drossa explains she really wanted to be an adventurer, and is in admiration of the party members. To show her appreciation, she offers the party the 3 gp 5 sp that they have spent thus far for rooms and tells them they are free to stay within her Inn. The party is somewhat reluctant to accept the money, but Drossa insists saying that it's high time someone stood up to the criminals. The party takes the money back, and Drossa heads back downstairs and goes back to bed.

4:00 AM - 9th of Vlaihr, 2272

The party begins heading to their respective rooms to turn in for the evening. Kasek wanders over to the next room they had rented where Celindriel is finishing out her watch. She lets him in after he knocks on the door and makes his way over to the window. Looking outside, he spots the large Wolfhound dog again. Celindriel walks up beside him and witnesses the dog sitting and merely looking up at their window while panting, and comments how that dog is impressively large. Kasek then asks Celindriel if she will need help in Sestatrea. Celindriel answers "I may...it all depends on what happens when I get there". Kasek asks if what Celindriel is doing is important, and she acknowledges that she believes it is. Kasek tells her that he could potentially be of some use to her depending on the nature of the task, and if she should need help, he would be open to offering his assistance. Celindriel thanks him for the offer and only comments that she'll "Keep that in mind". Kasek then asks what it is that Celindriel does with dead bodies, and Celindriel responds "I make sure the dead stays dead". He nods at her cryptic response, and then asks if he could see her shortsword. She shows it to him, a blade of dark blue steel with a black leather handle and a crescent moon sculpted into the pommel. A word in elvish is inscribed at the base of the blade, but Kasek is unable to decipher the meaning. He comments on its beauty, and hands the sword back to Celindriel mentioning that she handles it well. She thanks him, and also comments that he seems pretty capable with a shortsword as well. He merely states that its merely out of necessity, to which Celindriel replies "These days it seems to be...". He looks at her a moment, repeats her words "Keeping them dead...", and then excuses himself from her room. She closes the door behind him and returns to watching out the window.

Kasek heads back downstairs and runs into the two trustworthy Town Guards positioned by Berny. He informs them he's merely wishing to step outside a moment to see about a dog. They stand aside and he exits the building, making his way around the southern end of the Inn. He finds the Wolfhound sitting in the same position as it was when he witnessed it out the window. He approached the dog and took a knee a few feet away from him, and held his hand out towards the dog. The dog sniffed his hand and then rolled onto his back, exposing his belly to Kasek while wagging his tail. Kasek pets the dog's stomach, and the dog's leg begins kicking slightly. Kasek looks around sheepishly and then whispers to the dog "Who's a good boy?". The dog smiles at Kasek, rolls back onto his belly and licks Kasek on the side of his face. The dog then stares at Kasek for an awkwardly long amount of time, then gets up and walks off casually. Kasek watches the dog a moment, then proceeds back to the Grinning Kobold Inn, heads upstairs and goes to bed. Celindriel grins slightly to herself as she witnessed the whole interaction between Kasek and the dog from her bedroom within the Inn, and continues her watch for the remainder of the evening.

8:00 AM - 9th of Vlaihr, 2272

The party awakens on the day of Diat, the 9th of Vlaihr, 2272 around 8:00 AM. Kasek and Celindriel assemble in Ceona's room as Ceona gets situated and Levkaria sits brushing her hair on her bed. Feadog takes longer than usual, taking the morning for himself to primp and preen and eventually getting dressed in his feathered cap and flamboyant coat. Kasek approaches Levkaria and asks to see her dagger. She sheepishly produces it, and Kasek commends her on wielding it against their ambushers the previous evening. She is somewhat unsure on how to take the compliment, still unsure of herself and her new companions. Kasek then takes a moment to instruct Levkaria on different techniques she could use with the weapon. She shows genuine interest in learning more, and attempts to practice what he teaches her. At this time, Feadog joins the others, and they all decide to head to the Town Guard Barracks leaving Levkaria behind in the room.

They enter the Barracks and find Berny sitting at his desk speaking with his two trustworthy guards. He welcomes them, and after exchanging pleasantries, Berny announces that he is officially deputizing them into his service. He then asks if they're all ready to begin interrogating the prisoners. They setup in the interrogation room with the players taking different positions throughout the room in an attempt to look as intimidating as possible. The party asks that they interrogate Liam first, and Berny fetches him for them. Liam is shackled at the wrists and ankles, and is forced to sit in one of the two chairs at the table by the two trustworthy Hirane Guards. Berny then excuses himself from the room leaving the party to deal with him alone.

Liam's Interrogation

Feadog begins questioning Liam, but before Feadog is able to get a full question out, Liam breaks down and begins begging the party to not hurt him. The party begins interrogating him to the best of their ability given the fact that Liam is more or less a broken young man scared for his life. The party learns that the ambushers were ordered to attack the party by Sylrith, who gave instructions to Gilson, and Gilson gave the orders to Liam. Liam predominately takes his instructions from Gilson. Liam doesn't know what goes on at the Warehouse, or much of anything else. Celindriel comments that the party is wasting their time with Liam. Kasek asks Liam what was exchanged between Gilson and Tela at the What Ales You Tavern earlier that evening, and Liam admitted it was just them getting paid by Tela, 2 sp every few days to keep an eye on people poking into Rilanor, Sylrith, or Tela's business. Liam also admits they informed Sylrith about the party when they first encountered them coming off the Anellas. The party begins getting a little more rough with Liam, and he breaks down into a blabbering fool. The party eventually determines no further information can be gleaned and Ceona opens the door to talk with Berny. She tells Berny they'd like to bring in Gilson, but want Liam taken someplace else. Berny decides to take Liam to Rilanor's House to wait while the party interrogates Gilson.

Berny comes back into the interrogation room and collects Liam. He begins to leave the Barracks with Liam and instructs his two guards to collect Gilson for the party, and also informs them that he'll be at Rilanor's house with Liam. He tells them if the party needs anything to come and get him. They salute him and Berny leaves. The party begins spreading around evidence to make it look like they roughed up Liam pretty bad...a dagger in the table with some blood taken from Ceona cutting herself smeared across the table and chair. Kasek also bloodies his weapons and puts them on the table in clear display. The two guards collect Gilson from the cell, also shackled at the wrist and ankles, and plops him into the chair and leaves the party alone.

Gilson's Interrogation

Gilson seems to be a little more put-together than Liam, and the party begins their interrogation with Feadog playing good cop. They tell Gilson that they had to rough-up Liam pretty badly in order to get a few details out of him. Feadog also informs Gilson that Rilanor is dead, and Gilson shouldn't be so concerned about protecting him anymore. Gilson asks the party what they intend on giving him as far as assurances for protection against the people he's working for. The party merely tells Gilson they are unable to protect him unless he divulges the information. They persuade him on the issue, and he begins to tell the party that he's working for a group of smugglers called the Silver Ravens. He informs the party that Rilanor, Sylrith, and Tela are all involved in the Silver Ravens. Feadog asks about the mysterious robed individuals with the vials, and Gilson admits he doesn't know who they are, but that's who they're selling their goods to. He says they show up, meet with Athyen, Athyen screams at Rilanor, an exchange is made between Rilanor and Athyen, and Athyen exchanges the goods with the robed individuals.

Kasek asks for more information about the Silver Ravens, and Gilson admits that Rilanor runs the smuggling group. He manages the Waterwitch, which belongs to Lord Andel Caldel apparently, and Sylrith and the sailors set sail with it and head south to a unknown harbor or alcove where they pick up more individuals -- hired swords. The Waterwitch then sails and raids ships along the trade routes bound for Sestatrea. Gilson informs the party that they don't raid for gold or treasure, but raid for specific components. Once obtained, the Waterwitch returns and they unload the cargo into the Warehouse for safekeeping. Gilson reveals that they (the town guards) have been hired to keep an eye out for anyone poking into their business, and it's an opportunity to make some extra coin. They were also told if they didn't take the money, they would run into trouble. Ceona asks if Gilson has witnessed any meetings between the Silver Ravens and Lord Caldel. Gilson says he sees Rilanor (the Harbor Master), Sylrith (the Dock Foreman), and Tela (the Warehouse Foreman) all going in to House Caldel at various times to meet with Lord Caldel, though he's not entirely certain what the meetings involve. Kasek asks if Gilson has ever seen Athyen talk to any of the Silver Ravens, and Gilson admits that he's seen him go into the Warehouse, but Gilson isn't allowed in the Warehouse personally. Feadog asks if Gilson would know why Athyen would want to kill himself, and Gilson admits that Athyen probably killed himself because he's more loyal (out of fear) to his superiors. The party shows Gilson the emblem coin and asks if he knows anything about it. Gilson denies ever having seen anything like it.

Feadog tries another line of questioning, and asks what happens when Berny attempts to raid the Warehouse. Gilson snickers and says Berny's downfall is that he announces the raid to everyone before he actually does it. This gives the Silver Ravens ample time to empty the Warehouse in the middle of the night and transfer all the questionable materials to the Waterwitch. Kasek begins to scoff at everything Gilson has told them, and wants more information. Ceona asks about the Thug that was with Gilson and Liam, and Gilson admits the Thug is just a hired sword -- a mercenary they keep on the Waterwitch. Gilson repeats everything he knows. He gets paid by Tela, and takes orders from Sylrith. Both Tela and Sylrith take orders from Rilanor, and he's seen Rilanor go into House Caldel on several occasions. After meeting in House Caldel, Rilanor gives instructions to Sylrith and Tela. Every now and then, the mysterious robed individuals show up in town and meet with Athyen. Athyen meets with Rilanor and yells at him, and Rilanor bites his tongue during most of the interaction, however goods are exchanged between Rilanor and Athyen and the mysterious robed individuals leave the next day. Coin is given to Rilanor by Athyen, and Rilanor takes it, but he doesn't know what happens with the coin. Gilson admits Rilanor doesn't have a lot to show for the amount of coin that is exchanged. Celindriel presses him on this issue, and asks how much coin is exchanged. Gilson laughs and says "It's more than I'll ever see in a lifetime". Celindriel asks for a general estimation on the amount, and Gilson admits it would be piles and piles of several hundred gold pieces, if not more. Kasek is still somewhat unsatisfied by Gilson's answers, and both he and Ceona begin examining Gilson's teeth openly asking each other how much they might be able to get for a tooth necklace.

Feadog asks Gilson about what he knows regarding Edraele Trisyra. Gilson merely states that all he knows is she's not arrogant like the other elves he's met, but is naive and gullible. He also mentions that Lord Caldel would love to have his way with her, which causes both Celindriel and Ceona to feel justified in their earlier suspicions. Feadog states that he feels that Gilson knows something more than what he's letting on, and both Kasek and Ceona move in closer to intimidate Gilson. Gilson begins to search his memory, admitting that he's told the party everything he knows. He repeats the information he's already presented to the party in hopes of appeasing the party members. Ceona opens the door and instructs the guards out in Berny's office to go and collect Berny from Rilanor's house, and then she returns to interrogating Gilson. Kasek and Feadog begin to wonder if there's another angle to this whole situation that they're overlooking. On a hunch, Kasek asks Gilson about what he knows regarding Ennen Kytson. Gilson reveals that Rilanor would always take different components to Ennen and would threaten her to brew these concoctions. Rilanor would take them, and the guards would sometimes escort him back to either the Warehouse or to his house. Feadog asks if Gilson knows anything about the phrase 'Tears for friends', but Gilson honestly doesn't have any information on that particular subject.

The party begins talking among themselves about what to ask next. Celindriel asks Gilson if any of the shipments from the Silver Ravens have been running short lately. Gilson admits that he's not entirely certain, but he knows the Silver Ravens are freaked out right now. He knows the material that Rilanor is having Ennen make is not enough and they're running short. Naturally everyone is terrified over the prospect of not having enough of 'whatever' for these mysterious robed individuals. Feadog asks Gilson what it is that they're specifically making, and Gilson admits that he doesn't know what it is...he's only just witnessed them moving it in the vials that they carry. Celindriel asks for a description of the material. Gilson says that after Ennen makes it, Rilanor collects it and asks for the guards to escort him while carrying it. Gilson says the stuff is a dark brown tar-like substance. Kasek produces the vial given to him by Berny earlier and asks if it is the same material. Gilson confirms that is exactly the same material that they are manufacturing. The party begins musing to each other, and eventually determine there is nothing left to ask Gilson.

Next Target - Warehouse

At this point, Berny enters the interrogation room and exchanges some dialogue with Gilson, who argues back at him. The two trustworthy guards enter and remove Gilson back to the cells as Gilson yells out reminding the group that he 'cooperated'. The party informs Berny on everything they discovered from both Liam and Gilson. Berny concedes that it certainly sounds as if Lord Andel Caldel is involved, and also suggests that they need to get into the Warehouse. Kasek then decides to take this time to inform Berny about Lord Caldel touching Edraele in House Caldel. This visibly infuriates Berny, but Berny admits that it is somewhat known that Lord Andel Caldel is attempting to serenade Edraele. Kasek then asks Berny pointedly if this is all personal to him. Berny tells the party that he feels he's been on the level with wanting to make sure that the party has concrete evidence and that he and the party perform their due diligence before moving on any hunch. Berny admits that it would bring some personal satisfaction to see Lord Caldel brought to justice by him, but Berny feels that he is conducting his investigation in a professional and unbiased manner.

Berny concludes that given the information Gilson has given up -- while it is to be considered somewhat hearsay -- corroborates other individual's statements, meaning there is now enough circumstantial evidence to warrant them moving on the Warehouse or House Caldel, or both. The party decides to keep everything as secret as possible and vote to assault the Warehouse for incriminating evidence. They reason that if there is nothing within the Warehouse, they should then assault the Waterwitch immediately afterwards. Berny agrees, and the party begins their preparations.
