City of Glaion
Where The Constant March of Progress Beats Its Drum
Overview
Glaion is the trading center of the south western region of the Kingdom Of Galus. This region was also named after the city itself. It is currently under the rule of The Baron Lucas Berthelot. He prizes his city to be prosperous, culturally diverse, and religiously diverse. He tends to focus on the economy of the region before the needs of his people, though this does not stop him from being a benevolent philanthropist for the city. He doles out massive amounts of personal wealth to help the city, and to keep the order. He has a private standing army, independent of the regional federation between the Isle of Mhuzelt and the States of Huron.
Culture
The city is culturally diverse, full of far eastern influence and Mhzult gnomish pragmatism. The melting pot is governed by Lucas' Chancellor, Chancellor Michéle Lafleche, who oversees the execution of the law. He demands that the cultures leave their differences at the city Pomerium, and conflict is not permitted inside the city without all parties involved being punished and fined. While it may be a heavy handed system, some would say, it has been effective. The differing cultures do not squabble inside the city, as the punishment is not worth the time. Thus the city has developed a culture civility, and graciousness.
Royal Garden
This is the Barons personal garden. He tends to grow a large assortment of medicinal plants, that he uses for research. Well, his court wizard and chemist do the research. He finds this more useful to him than waiting on local alchemists and herbalists to get back to him. The garden is home to a large variety of common, rare, and unique plants. The local Druid circle also helps in in this endeavor. As he has made a deal with them stating that their wishes will be given more weight, if they assist him in keeping his botanical masterpiece thriving. You can learn a massive amount of information on flora and fauna here.
Districts
Coin Barrel
Hosts the outer most ring of the City as well as the Dockside the handles the vast majority of the shipping and recieving of goods in the City. The proverbial life blood of the city as life melds in a constant ebb and flow of humanity, Dwarves and Gnomish kind. Also host to the four main gates of the Capitol where each of the Four Garrisons of CIty Watch call home and reside in.
This is typically the first stop for the vast majority of travellers, tourists, and anyone else who happens to find themselves in the Seat of Power for the Kingdom Of Galus. Here they will find the most frequented resturants, Inns, taverns, and sources of local spice. Though, one should watch their step, the Guard are heavy here.
Here the Wayfare Guild can be found just before entering the Market District. The Portal Nexus that serves as the mass transit between Federation Cities can be found just inside its courtyard.
The Wayfarers Guild
This a somewhat exclusive Guild as they demand a certain type of caster (Wayfares Guild ). They typically get acolyte recommendations from the
Baron of Glaion Lucas Berthelot ) and his Consuls. Though this does not mean they are inhospitable, as they are an immense resource for the city as a whole. They also help any caster find whatever information they want, as long as they don't try and join the guild without their approval. They have a division that acts as a mass transit system for a very small fee.
Market District
Now, as one would expect, here be markets. Though, if one was prepared to deal with shifty merchants, unkempt shops in the bustle of one of the largest cities on the continent, one need put their worries to rest. The Market District is by all metrics the arena in which the Economies of the Federation, Enemies, and allies come to put thier greatest foot forward. The Streets clean, and inviting. Many areas to allow Citizens and shoppers to rest in the shade or enjoy nearby fountains. The constant smell of food and spices wafting through the breeze as the polished bronze and brass of the Industiral City capture the full attention of the viewer.
Here the The Forgemaster, You Khamere has but their best foot forward to display the wonders of the Forgehouse and wow the thousands strong audiences with constant technological advangement. Automitons aiding the shop keepers, vast electric works lighting the city from the ever constant crush of the night. New polished pipe systems to handle the everyday life of the common man, from water to steam, Khamere has ushered forth a new age for the world. And the Markets of Glaion are the stage on which they bask.
The Merchants Guild
This Guild acts as the Treasury, and influences economic policy in the region. The Baron and the guild align in priorities thus do not argue much. Though, the guild has had member that have suggested aggressive economic policy that harm the general populace, that have incited the ire of the court. They also act as the city tax collectors and loan office. They are given a great deal of freedom in trade, and some members may be willing to trade in some illicit goods, so long as the Guard isn't involved.
The Forgehouse
While not a true guild, as this is an exceptionally large work space for artisans, and metal workers. It does boast the residence of the regions greatest smith. A Half Dwarf, with gnomish bloodlines, named simply as The Forgemaster, You Khamere. Though the master smith would not tell you their real name, as they think this is funnier. You, is an Artificer, who combines their smithing and magic to create some amazing pieces. One of the notable pieces that came out of this grand workshop is the Light of Ignation. Which is a lamp that burns away all lies told in it's presence. This item was seized by the Court, and the Master was paid a small fortune for it.
The Artists Quarter
While this is it's unoffical name, even the Courts have been calling the Baptiste District this for generations now. Here one can find many of the actual residence of the City, home to the commoners as well as the middle class. There is not much to be seen here, unless one is foolish enough to ignore the constant music coming from homes and small shops dotting the area. Nor pay attention to the marvolous murals and paintings that cover nearly every availble surface the close one gets to the actual Artists Quarter.
Though, if one was careful in Coin Barrel, one should be quiet here unless they whish to be involved in the CIties more... nuanced aspects. Where the City of Port De Renard is host to the theives calling themselves the Foxes, Glaion is home to Salandrahth. The Continent's most well connected informant that has ever walked the Branches of the tree, or in her case, slithered.
Gables Great Bar room
This massive tavern is less of a bar, as it is an open forum for all who wish to discuss any topic under the sun. While yes, it is still a bar, but it functions as notice board, tavern, gossip lounge, debate hall, and political discussion. This is usually the first stop for travelers in the city as they can over hear all sorts of useful information from all parts of the world and city. The owner of the establishment is a Gorgon Woman, named Salandrahth . She fosters this atmosphere by engaging in it actively while she brings food and drink to all. Stoking arguments with fresh information, and adding differing perspectives to political discussion. She will also give travelers information, or direct you to someone who has that information. All she demands is that you buy a beer.
Take some time to sit, for there is much in this City. The Long and storied history of the town, from it's bloody conquests to take the Mountian Range to the West, from their War with Port De Renard to the Great War under the Romac Caliphate, to the current conflict with the Zybyine Caliphate.
From Wine wars that held the attention of the Nobility from eras past to present day. To the wide and varied local culters and the things they fear. The City is content, though not happy. Unease building as news of war, raids to the south, The gnomes to the north building far greater navies than ever seen. The Great Tree is a contentous place, faiths reconciling unknowable pasts, the people growing angry with the priesthoods. The gods no longer answering prayers.
Heavy handed politics while the few honorable men left in the thick of it, try to uphold some semblance of law. The Iron fist of the Baron, the Steadfast loyalty of his allied cities, the constant drone of the masses to do something. The Air of the City of Glaion is layer in modern wonders, new ways of life, but back lit by forces in the background seeking to gain power and influence.
