Baron of Glaion Lucas Berthelot Character in The Great Tree | World Anvil

Baron of Glaion Lucas Berthelot

Lucas Berthelot is largely considered by his subjects to be a gracious ruler. He holds court for at least an hour or so a day, and allows anyone from the region to approach with any problem they have. He has a tendency to delegate smaller issues to his Chancellor Michel Lafleche, but, does take a personal hand in any issues that may affect the city economy or security of the region or something that just happens to catch his attention.   While many only consider his role as just this, he does do much more for the city. His advisors are Members of the Guild of Merchants, and the Guild of Wayfarers. So, he does interact with these Guilds and influences their decisions as well as his.   He also holds the key to the Great library, and is very selective about who as access to it, as there are plenty of secrets in there he would rather not be public knowledge. He will answer many questions the people bring to him, though a few select subjects you would never be able to get a word from him. Gossip says that he has an extensive spy network adding to the library at all times of the day.   He has very lucrative business in the Winemaking industry. His farm for the Vineyard exists on the north quadrant of the Outer Fields, and frequently visits the farm to inspect the crop. The vineyard is currently fighting with the other winemaker in the region for dominance over the Glaion market. Though, Lucas is extremely hesitant to leverage his power in the court to do this for him. He has made many public statements saying he he wants the quality of his wine to be the determining factor for market share, not that he is the Baron.   He has recently expanded the building projects to help with the defense on the dock side harbor. He maintains the public transit systems, and has began retrofitting the Market Square with more ornamentation. He has outfitted his standing army with enhanced gear and has the Sightless training his generals in more advanced tactics. He hopes he will no longer need the Federation of Cities to ensure the defense of the city and it's settlements. All this reworking has been paid out of his own personal wealth.   He is a skilled diplomat, and has helped settle disputes between neighboring Cities, and recently has began helping the local Goblin Clan.
