Divine magic

The prime duality, which the Elderkin called Uhd is the core of all magics. Blood magic is the most commonly understood manifestation of it, and itself comes in many forms. The most powerful manifestation of the prime duality, is that of the divine. It is a natural extension of the way Blood Magic works to manifest internals desires into tangible forms, but it's true strength comes from the collective will of many, and its manifestations can be unpredictable, and indeed world-changing, as The Godling Wars and Destruction they caused are testament to.   Essentially, divine magic is the wider implication of blood magic, when harnessed at large scales by collective belief and worship.

Divine magic in ancient times

The Elder Gods themselves were the first manifestation of divine magics, and fed for aons upon the worlds they created. But others came later, born from the collective will of the Elderkin and their many descendants.

The New Divinity

In the oldest myths of the Arkin and Deepkin, from the millenia before the Elderkin Schism, was the War of Emancipation and The Cosmic Defiance that saw the war's end. These myths tell of the long slavery of the Elderkin to the Elder Gods as they held dominion over the world.   The Elderkin discovered the secrets of Blood Magic from their masters, and during the War of Emancipation they created what was known as the New Divinity. This was the trinity of gods: Creator, Preserver and Destroyer. It was through using the powers of these new Gods that the Elderkin were able to finally banish the Elder Gods from the world.   This was the greatest act of divine magic ever performed upon the world, and much of the primal power of Uhd was consumed in the process. While much magic still exists into the modern world, it is nothing compared to the powers that were once wielded.

The Godling Wars

The Age of Ascendency saw the proliferation of hundreds, if not thousands, of what became known as Godlings. These were the upshot of the social machinations of the rich, popular and powerful during the final years of the Assembly. The personality cults of the powerful generated many thousands of followers, and the collective fervour of those followers led to the creation of the Godlings.   The worship of personalities was chaotic, and in most cases the Godlings that were created bore only a passing resemblance to whoever had originally inspired their creation. Popular musicians and artists had Godlings whose vanity and pride turned to such powerful narcissism where they would drain the life of others to feed their own youthfulness. Political leaders generated Godlings that would become rage-fueled tyrants that revelled in violence and domination, and leaders of Industry generated Godlings of lust and greed, such as Okudi, Tooth of the Devourer, who would literally consume entire cities.   The chaos of the Godling Wars eventually led to The Destruction itself and the long ages of Shadowfire that saw the remaking of the world.

Divine magic in the modern world

Sine the Destruction, all magic has become unstable and weakened further. But Divine Magics are still employed across the world.

God Tethering

The Lords of Fire in The Gleaming City have learnt to control and even commodify the exchange of divine magic through the strict hierarchy of subservience and devotion controlled through Tithe Binding.   The complex hierarchy of belief is channeled to the Lords of Fire themselves, or more precisely to their Godlings. Unlike the utter chaos of the Godling Wars, the Lords have learned to control their own Godlings in a process known as God Tethering. This means that the power granted by their worshippers is channeled directly to their Godling, and that Godling remains subservient to the Lord. The relationship is not infallible however, as the recent death of the Fire Lord Kholkosi shows.

The Church of the Faceless

The Church of the Faceless sits at the heart of the Protectorates and is devoted to preventing the rise of new forms of worship, precisely to avoid another Godling War.   They channel devotion and subservience to the Trinity through complex social indoctrination through The Choosing, extensive propaganda through their control of both The Academy and the Order of Salvitas.   The The Sly Shields are active in finding and weeding out instances of hearsay, any overt display of hero worship of members of The Cabal or other cults that crop up from time to time.   The church is also strong proponents of the wars against the goblins of The Dawncrags and Uferbrech Archipelago, specifically in an attempt to stamp out their practice of ancestor worship and the following of Wala-Kofa.   The Church has recently turned its attention to the Lords of Fire in the Gleaming City as a prime example of hearsay and the dangers of unchecked divine magics, but is keenly aware that their strength is no match for them at this stage.

Ancestor spirits

The Seers of Ashtiri, and in particular the Shadowseers of the Uferbrech Goblins commune with and channel what they believe are the Kahi, Ancestor Spirits.   The Academics of the Protectorates believe that these are not literal ghosts however, and may in fact be godlings generated by the veneration and communal beliefs of the living goblins and seers. This is one of the reasons the Church of the Faceless seeks to subjugate the Uferbrech clans and wipe out the practice.

Divination magics

It is believed that the mystics among the Scrappers and the Stoneforged Assembly, as well as the curious Saltseers call upon divine magics when practicing their divinations.   Academics argue that they are not so much predicting the future but perhaps creating or influencing it through their manipulation of divine magics. If a particular prophecy or prediction is strong enough, and believed by enough followers, then it becomes more likely to occur.
