Hinall

The heart of the lumber industry in Edrea

“You know, Hinall, the lumbering town?” Farrah said, Zuree still didn’t indicate didn’t indicate that she recognized the name, “the one that supplies most of Bechlea with its wood?”
— Conversation between Farrah and Princess Zuree
Hinall is the single most important wood supplier in the entirety of The Kingdom of Edrea and it's estimated that the town delivers up to 15 percent of all used wood in Edrea. Hinall delivers up to 80 percent of the wood used in Bechlea.
The town is located in the northern parts of Bech and it's one of the most northern towns in all of Edrea. In the past it was often plagued by Iwachi invaders, since it's so close to one of the passes in the Laicha Mountain Range.
In the last hundred years or so, Hinall's defenses were reinforced. This detered many Iwachi raiders from targeting the town.

The citizens of Hinall are not fond of the Iwachi. They’re pretty close to the mountain pass and have been raided multiple times over the last few years.

The new line of defence

Hinall used to be raided quite a bit. The general attitude about it was "oh that sure is unfortunate, but we cannot do anything about it". But soon the attacks increased and everyone just had enough. The town leaders went to the king to get financial support and soon Hinall had a wall as well as a few trusty cannons. Professional guards were trained and stationed at every road into the town as well as near the weak spots north of the town.   Being shot at with canon balls is a pretty good motivation to find a new place to raid. After a few instances of raiders being shot after, it seemed like most got the message and the attacks became scarce.

Industry and trade

Lumber Industry
Hinall is the most important town when it comes to the wood industry in Edrea. It has almost endless suplies as it's located in the middle of The Forest of Lihan.   Besides logging, the citizens of Hinall also take forestry very serious, and they make sure to replant in areas they've cut trees in. Some of Hinall's residents do nothing else than plant new trees in the forest, this is mostly financed by the logging companies.

Wood working
Though Hinall sells raw material (lumber) the residents also use it to make products which they sell as well. Furniture is the largest export from Hinall after lumber, and the products are highly sought after.   The woodworkers of Hinall are known for their skill and the high quality of their finished products. Buyers have to put in a specific order, as most items are unique. There's only a handful of companies who mass-produce furniture.

The Market
Two days every week, the market in Hinall is open. It's hosted in the market square, which is in the central parts of the town. Here all the shop-owners open a stall as well as other sellers from out of town. Buyers from all around Edrea stop by the market to buy goods.
Mining
Hinall is less known for mining, though that is also an industry that thrives well in the town. There are several ore deposits near Hinall, but it's ordinary ores like coal and iron. Most of the mined goods are used in the town itself, around 20 percent is sold to Bechlea.
The clocktower in the middle of the town square has become a symbol for Hinall as well as the Hinall town markets that are hosted there.
It is counted as one of the most important buildings in town. Most of the towns schedule is tied to the ringing of the clock tower bells.

That was a really nice article to read! I really like your writing style, is nice and easy to read, and it has a good flow to it. The beautiful drawings also really help.   I saw on the map that Hinall is really close to the sea. Do they transport their exports through the sea or through the land? Another thing that I was left wondering is what types of trees do they plant and grow for wood.   I thought the initial quote was a bit difficult to read. I'm not sure if this will help, but I think something like this may be easier to read: "Hinall, you know, the lumbering town." Farrah said, but Zuree still didn’t indicate that she recognized the name/town, “the one that supplies most of Bechlea with its wood?”

On the face of it, a town associated with lumber production doesn't sound very interesting, but the level of detail you included here combined with your writing ability makes for a really engaging read!!   I'm still kind of new to this site, but your profile is full of insightful reads! ^__^ Also, anybody who likes Civ V must be an awesome person, even if you /are/ bent on world domination xD

Thank you!!   I'm very happy you didn't get too bored while reading, it can be a bit challenging to make it interesting yeah... lumber isn't exactly dramatic or anything XD   World domination?? I have no *cough* clue what you're talking about ( >. >)

No problem! On that note, there's a really cool resource I stumbled across that you may be interested in titled "Urban Dressing: Logging Town". There's a free sample of the document you can download that lists 100 sights and sounds that you'd potentially experience in such a place :) The free sample is at the bottom of the page on the following link, maybe it'll give you some further inspiration!   http://www.ragingswan.com/urban-dressing-logging-town/#more-1848   Hahah SUUUUUREEEEEE /issues a challenge from King Kamehameha xD
