When I decided to join World Anvil, I had no idea how much it would change my life. It was a moment of impulse and loneliness- I was working far from home and searching for something creative to fill my free time. I’d heard of the Anvil years before but never tried it, mostly because I was afraid of sharing my work and exposing myself to others. But taking that leap turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Joining this community has truly improved my life and my relationship with myself.
I never expected an online community to feel like a sanctuary, but this one truly does. It’s a pure expression of creativity and inclusivity; a place where toxicity doesn’t exist, and a haven where weirdos and nerds like me can collaborate, discuss, and grow side by side. I feel like I’ve finally found my place here, and I want to thank each and every one of you for accepting me and helping me from day one!
Now, let’s dive into one of my favorite things about being here: reading and getting inspired by all the amazing works this community has to offer! It was tough to choose, but I’ve put together a list of articles and creators that earned a special place in my heart during my very first WorldEmber. Shall we?
Read, Love, Inspire
Choosing which articles to showcase here turned out to be quite the challenge! This place is so vast and filled with creativity that it’s nearly impossible not to miss a few hidden treasures along the way. I did my best, reading as much as I could, and here’s what it came down to. Enjoy!
Beautiful Traditions
I loved the idea of a competition transforming into a yearly tradition.
Forgefest by
Nulcheck does exactly that, and with great success! The backstory of the origins of this competition is engaging and brings the world to life. I'd like to learn more about the two blacksmiths who initiated this competition or even the traveler who urged them to do so. Maybe that was his plan all along? And if so, why? Also, the references to the community are simply adorable!
The idea of dark and unconventional beauty has always appealed to me. What I loved about
Rince na Oídhche by one of my favorite creators,
Demongrey, is the writing. As I read the description of the first dance that opens the celebration, I found myself drawn to it, as if I were watching a movie. It is vivid and engaging. The coexistence of fae and humans is intriguing. I'm sure there’s more to learn about this dynamic by following the linked articles, and I’m thrilled about it!
People of the Worlds
The Laughing Queen of the Dead... Just the title alone is enough to captivate you, and it certainly did for me. This was an extraordinary read: fast-paced, engaging, rich in detail, and straight to the point. I believe the name of the goddess is a nod to a fellow Anvilite, and if that’s the case, I absolutely adore it! The story of Rin, from a seemingly minor and unassuming goddess to the most crucial asset in the most catastrophic war the land has ever seen, is nothing short of remarkable.
Qurilion is, without a doubt, a genius!
I couldn't leave
Zeyra Leryn by
Leijona off my list. I know the writer put a lot of thought and effort into creating this character, and it really shows in the final result. Zeyra is talented and resilient- much like many of the creators here. There's still room to explore more about her, such as her relationships and the hardships of her childhood, and I’d be very interested in learning more about her in the future. Overall, she’s a very engaging figure that makes you want to learn more about the world itself.
A band of heroes
As a passionate TTRPG gamer and DM I found the story of the
Triad Primus by
Alan Byers both inspiring and beautiful. This is not your typical organization but a fellowship of heroes and the many adventures they undertook in their active years. Each of them has a unique, distinct character, which is no small feat to achieve. While all of them have their own appeal, I must confess, I can’t resist the allure of the wizard Inum of Arshau. I’d love to learn more about him and his life! Truly great writing! And, you’re going to love the Dog- I guarantee it!
Interesting Conditions
One might think that if I were to choose a
Mochi article for this list, it would be one about a species. While I adore most of these articles though, magic is my true soft spot, and this one is simply magnificent. Time is a tricky concept, whether in a scientific world or a high fantasy one. I think the fact that
Time Ripped is a condition is a brilliant approach- it perfectly captures the chaotic and unpredictable consequences of tampering with time. The symptoms and effects are downright terrifying. I’d love to read a story about someone who dared to meddle with time in Yonderverse; maybe a prose piece?
Vampire lore and stories are my absolute favorite! It’s always intriguing to discover new takes on the vampiric condition, and
Palepellis by
CoolG offers a fresh angle I wouldn’t miss. In this world, vampires aren’t the result of a curse or long-lost loves; instead, they’re creatures with a genetic mutation that makes them sensitive to light, making them nocturnal. While reading, I couldn’t help but wonder if there’s ever been an attempt to cure this condition, especially since Ysteria is a world where magic exists. That would make for an interesting twist!
A Unique Conflict
The
The Cask Conflict of 35-36, 2A is a fantastic read, turning a resource war into a rich tale of political drama and cultural identity. I loved the visuals in this as much as the writing itself- especially the maps that show the different phases of the conflict. The article by
Koragath masterfully balances complexity with clarity, making the dense history engaging. Overall, it’s a must-read for anyone who loves political intrigue woven into worldbuilding!
A Fiery Culture
The matriarchal society presented in the
Layikanian Culture of Fire is so well-developed that it inspired me to engage more actively in writing about the different ethnicities in my own world. Written by
Blue Fairy, this piece not only showcases magnificent writing but also features mesmerizing art. I particularly loved the section about Layikani food. One thing I’d like to learn more about is whether a central governance system exists. While it’s mentioned that their societies are ruled by either queens, priestesses or employees of the Ministry of Fire Watchers, it makes me wonder if there’s a central figure or organization tying it all together.
Food for the Soul
I have two passions: writing and food! The
Brelish Bowl by
Dhelian combines both in such a delightful way. I love the story behind the dish and the amazing photo used in the article- it even inspired me to try making it myself (and it turned out delicious!). What truly gives this dish and the article its unique charm is the final line:
"...where Brelish clerics often find themselves craving after a taste of home." Honestly, that’s what food is all about: memories.
An Awesome Material
I recently discovered the world created by
StillnessandSilence and I have to say it was a great find! The
Bloodstone article introduces a rare stone material with incredible magical properties and a rich history. I absolutely loved the artwork incorporated into the article. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to adjust the color of the quote text for better readability, though that’s just my personal opinion. One particularly fascinating aspect of the article is the story of the pair pendants- I’d love to know more about them! Excellent work overall!
Here is to a Happy New Year!
As yet another challenge comes to a close, I’m left feeling inspired, grateful, and motivated. Reflecting on the incredible creations and the talented individuals behind them has been a journey of growth and appreciation. This community has shown me that creativity thrives when shared, and encouragement can spark the most brilliant ideas.
I hope this article not only highlights the amazing work of others but also encourages anyone reading it to keep creating, sharing, and celebrating their own unique voice. Here’s to another year of inspiration, connection, and endless possibilities!
Let's forge ahead together!
Happy New Year Imagica! It's been such a pleasure to have you and I'm so happy you've gained so much. I can't wait to see what 2025 brings!
