Botanicals of the Whistling Mountains
In the Whistling Mountains, many botanicals thrive in different areas of the huge forest surrounding the mountain range. Many of these plants and mushrooms have magical properties and are able to be used in potions, magic and science. Found in windswept cliffs, shadowed valleys, and glowing caves, these flora are revered by adventurers, healers, and mages for their beauty, utility, and ties to the mountain’s ancient lore.
Whisperleaf
A pale green plant with translucent, fan-shaped leaves that emit a faint humming sound when wind brushes past. Is able to absorb sound and store it; releasing the sound later can create soothing melodies or amplify battle cries. Aids in the eerieness of the forests. Thought to harmonize with the mountains, it is used for crafting magical instruments.Glowspore Lanterncap
A bioluminescent mushroom with a bright orange cap that glows during twilight.Its spores can light up dark areas and temporarily grant night vision to those who inhale them. Found in caves carved into the mountainside, glowing like tiny stars in the dark. Miners in the Whistling Mountains use these mushrooms to navigate treacherous tunnels.Embervine
A creeping, crimson vine that radiates warmth and glows faintly like embers. Can spark small flames or act as a heat source for survival in freezing conditions. Thrives in sheltered alcoves warmed by geothermal vents. Legends claim the vine's fire comes from a slumbering dragon buried deep within the mountain.Windveil Fern
A delicate silver fern that sways rhythmically, even in still air. Creates breezes to calm its surroundings and can deflect arrows or small projectiles. Found in high-altitude groves where air pressure creates natural wind tunnels. Often called "The Dancer's Fern," it is said to inspire movement and grace. This plant has small, pearlescent bulbs that shimmer in the morning dew. When cracked open, they release a burst of wind that can knock back foes or fill sails in calm weather. Found on windswept plateaus where gusts are fierce. Often revered by sailors and ship crews.Twilight Bellflower
Purple flowers with petals shaped like tiny bells that ring softly at sunset. The sound wards off spirits and can soothe restless minds, aiding sleep. Found in shadowed valleys at the mountain range's base. Thought to be planted by mountain spirits to protect travelers from malevolent forces.Crystalcap Mycelium
Clusters of multi colored crystalline mushrooms that grow in bunches resembling crystal clusters. Their caps can store light, glowing brightly at night and providing a source of magical energy. Found in deep mountain caves with reflective crystal walls. Rumored to have fallen from the heavens, these fungi are used in starlight rituals.Frostbloom Ivy
A creeping vine with icy blue leaves that sparkle like frost. Absorbs heat from its surroundings, lowering the temperature in a small radius and preserving perishables. Found near frozen waterfalls and perpetually cold crevices top the north. Believed to be a breath perfume.Echo Bulb
A pink plant with round white bulbs that can capture and release sounds. Can mimic voices or store sound for later use, often used for communication or traps. Grows in wind-carved alcoves known for echoing noises. Local hunters use them to lure prey or signal allies over long distances.Mourning Widow’s Thistle
A black, thorny plant with tear-shaped flowers that drip a nectar resembling blood. The nectar is a potent poison but can also heal grief-related ailments when diluted. Found in grave-like mounds hidden along mountain ridges. Said to grow where broken hearts are buried, its flowers symbolize sorrow and renewal.Skyblossom Vine
A vine with flowers that shift colors based on the weather, turning deep blue before storms and bright white in calm conditions. Acts as a natural barometer. Drapes over rocky outcroppings near open skies. Mountain tribes believe the vine’s blooms are blessings from the goddess Ra'rena.Thunderheart Puffball
A large, light yellow puffball mushroom that turns a darker yellow when cut into. Said to carry a static discharge that, if set off in the right way can shock or even electrocute people. Found near lightning-scorched peaks where storms frequently gather. Said to be the remnants of thunder spirits, they are handled with great caution by adventurers.Keep in mind that this list is not echaustive, these just happen to be the ones I've observed throughout my time in the Whistling Mountains. There are likely more to discover there than this. Be careful. If you do explore the flora of this area, make sure to document it.
