Palepellis

What Is This?

The majority of vampires suffer from a genetic condition known as palepellis, which hinders the production of skin pigmentations and leaves their skin with an unnaturally pale appearance.
— Excerpt from Vampires - The Creature

Causes & Effects

Palepellis seems to be the result of a mutation, or at the very least, changes, of the genes affecting the amount of skin pigments produced by the body. This alteration leads to a notable decrease in skin pigmentation levels, resulting in the pale appearance of the skin. As a consequence, vampires with palepellis might be more susceptible to sun damage and certain environmental factors.
In certain cases, palepellis can extend to the hair and eyes, resulting in shades of white, blonde, and even striking red or orange.

Moreover, vampires affected by palepellis are unable to remain in sunlight for extended periods, as it can severely scorch their skin. This condition not only limits their daytime activities but also forces them to seek shelter during daylight hours. Consequently, they often resort to nocturnal lifestyles, becoming more reclusive and dependent on the shadows for survival.

How Vampires Deal With This Condition

Skin pigments play a crucial role in shielding the skin from the sun's harmful rays, prompting these vampires to don thick cloaks with hoods or wide-brimmed hats whenever they venture outside, to protect their delicate skin from burning. ... Vampires whose eyes are affected by palepellis must wear heavily tinted sunglasses when outdoors to safeguard their light-sensitive vision.
— Excerpt from Vampires - The Creature
To shield themselves from the sun, some vampires resort to alternative methods, such as taking shelter in the dense forests of Ysteria, where towering trees create impenetrable shadows over the ground, or opting to remain indoors throughout the daylight hours.

How The Condition Is Perceived by Vampires

In a somewhat surprising twist, vampires find this condition quite appealing. They believe that possessing pale, light-coloured features bestows upon them an ethereal and alluring allure, captivating those who gaze upon them and making them more vulnerable to their irresistible charm. In a striking contrast, the pale features of these blood-sucking creatures give them a ghostly and intimidating appearance, evoking fear and dread in their unsuspecting prey. Yet, this duality of allure and terror is what makes them fascinating and enigmatic figures in Ysteria. They effortlessly navigate the fine line between seduction and menace, leaving a lasting impression on those who encounter them.   Recognizing the strategic advantages that palepellis confer in their quest for power and dominance, vampire families often arrange marriages between their affected offspring and other afflicted vampires. This practice ensures that the condition is transmitted through multiple generations.

Interesting explanation for the appearance of vampires. Also interesting, that they think it makes them more interesting. I’d disagree though :D

I have vitiligo, and reading this made me think about my own condition. It would be interesting to explore what would happen if a vampire were only partially afflicted. Great article—I really enjoyed it!

Glad you think so. And while I based palepellis more on albinism, you do pose a fun question :D

An embraced illness - I love it! It's amazing how something as prevalent as this trait causes such radical changes to an entire group of people. Changing culture, living locations and waking hours. A great article packed with implications!

This is a great way to explain the appearance of vampires, and the fact that it is considered an "illness" is, as a whole, honestly quite refreshing! Normally, Vampirism is seen as the "condition", but having it in this manner makes it more interesting. I also like the description on how different vampires see their condition differently, with some thinking it makes them more beautiful, and others more grotesque, essentially. I saw that someone below mentioned about "partial palepellis" and I 100% agree with them; that would be the only thing I would like to see added. Almost like vitiligo, perhaps? Anyway, thank you for writing, and awesome job!
