Shiran Da'har - The Serpent's Maze
Contains mention of spiders and darkness
Fear, a cold, slithering serpent, coiled around Aryi's chest. He fumbled for his brass lantern, his calloused fingers trembling. The dim glow flickered back to life, casting long, dancing shadows that writhed and twisted like monstrous apparitions from a fever dream.Beneath the Serpent's spine, never touched by the rays of the blistering sun and the gentle caress of the desert winds, these tunnels and caverns have slept for ages undisturbed by man, undiscovered - but not uninhabitated. Riches and beauty await in its depths, but the earth has swallowed many of its children whole.
The chittling rustle he heard before grew louder, closer. Aryi pressed himself against the wall, his heart hammering frantically against his ribs. In the dim light, he could barely make out the tunnel's walls, covered in a layer of spider silk , glittering with an eerie, dancing light that beat with the frantic rhythm of his lanterns flame.
He stumbled onwards, down just another winding tunnel as the nets grew thicker, a desperate gait deeper into the darkness, looking for a way out of this realm cloaked in eternal night. A low, guttural moan escaped his lips, a sound that was swallowed by the abyssal dark, leaving behind only the chilling echo of his own despair.
Geographical Overview
Beneath the towering peaks of the Serpent's Spine, a winding labyrinth of beauty and deadly peril slumbers. Cloaked in eternal twilight, the only lights that ever grace this subterranean realm are glowing fungi, the distant flicker of crystalline formations, and the lanterns of those desperate and foolhardy enough to wander below the very earth itself. Its entrances, located in the deep mountain valleys are known to few, made possible only once you won the trust of the silk hunters Descending into one of the few, carefully hidden entrances, a chilling draft sweeps through the narrow passageways, a murmur that whispers echoes of bygone eras. The distant drip of water echoes from the depths, beckoning curious explorers deeper into the maze's heart. Venturing deeper, the winding caves and tunnels become increasingly bizarre, a window into a primal time before man walked the land. Giant stalactites hang from the ceiling like petrified icicles, while massive stalagmites, rising from the earth like stalks of wheat, pierce the floor. Intricately carved, some seem sculpted by an unseen hand, while others, smooth and polished, reflect the light in a thousand different ways, a dance of twisting colors that vanishes back into the shadows once one has passed. And above all, silence reigns, broken only by the softly whispering crunch of footsteps on the granite floor and the distant echo of falling water. The cavern walls close in, shadows dance and writhe, and grotesque shapes watch silently from the walls in the flickering light. Slowly, the gentle glow of the cave fungi dims and the light fades, darkness embracing the tunnels in eternal night. The only sound that can be heard now is the rhythmic pulse of one's own heartbeat, a quickening drumbeat of suspended wonder and fear. Then, within complete darkness, a faint, ethereal glow appears, a whisper of hope in the night. Drawing nearer, soft, flickering light reveals a cavern of mesmerizing beauty. The rocky walls are adorned with countless crystals, sparkling with an otherworldly glow, each crystal a moment of frozen lightning and thunder. Yet, even amidst this beauty, terrible danger lurks. Narrow passages, treacherous chasms, and sudden drops threaten the unwary. The shifting ground may give way, plunging the explorer into the abyss. And as the labyrinth deepens, its passageways narrowing and twisting, spider webs, shimmering, iridescent drapings appear along the walls, first just singular strands, then a tapestry across the cavern walls, glittering in the lantern's light. Slowly, a sense of unease creeps in, the silence too profound, the beauty too perfect. A sudden gust of wind, sweeping through the chamber, extinguishes all lights. Darkness descends, a cold draft brushing against the skin. Within the still air, there is the soft rustle of chitin scittering trough the tunnels.Flora and Fauna
Deep underground, forever untouched by the sun's rays, cloaked in darkness and shadows, this hidden world of twisting tunnels and caves thrives, unknown and unseen by any living soul. Bioluminescent fungi cast their glow across the winding tunnels, colorful stars glowing in the eternal night. Within their dim light, lichen and pale, stunted plants grow towards a heaven they will never reach. A menagerie of creatures, adapted to the perpetual twilight, calls these caverns and subterranean waters home. Blind cave fish, their eyes white and blind, remnants of a distant past, navigate the murky waters of the shimmering underground pools. Tiny land crabs and cave louses, their translucent bodies illuminated by the bioluminescent fungi, scurry across the cavern floor in search of morsels. And in the silent, inky blackness, bats swoop and dart, mysteriously finding their way through the maze of tunnels. But these are by far not the largest or most dangerous inhabitants of the tunnels. Deep within the labyrinth, silk spiders weave their nets. Clad in pocked chitin, giants compared to their surface-dwelling cousins, they spin intricate webs of iridescent silk both beautiful and deadly, always on the hunt for anything living, beast or men alike.
And there are traces of even stranger creatures, beasts no living eye has seen before: Giant, blind sloths armed with claws as sharp as diamonds digging further and further and giant burrowing worms that could swallow a ship whole. The most fantastic tales tell of creatures called Gem ferrets, their body made of shimmering crystal, a darting, shimmering blue flicker in the eternal night.
Population:
Very few adventurers beside the Silk Hunters have found their way into the cave's on their own. Of those, even fewer returned, their stories fragmented and twisted like the tunnels themselves. It is practically unheard of to meet another living soul in the twisting tunnels, however, not even the most seasoned souls among these daring adventurers is brave or crazy enough to claim these tunnels as a home.Beneath the serpent's spine it lies,
in the night. the widow weeps,
in darkness deep, where beauty sleeps,
the spider now the hunter keeps.

Heard in a silk hunter's village
Great expeditions have been launched into the depths, few have returned, but they tell tales of an unending labyrinth, a whole world that that no human has touched yet. Among the scholars of Al'Nahar there is a lively debate if there is a possible passageway trough the mountains to be found there - so far, all expeditions looking for it have ended in failure.
Importance to the people
For most of the kaharan people, the existence of the serpent's maze remains a myth, a whispered tale of horror and adventure passed down through generations. Few believe in its reality, and fewer still dare to venture into its depths. After all, the exact location of these caves remains a closely guarded secret, known only to a select few: the Silk Hunters.Founded by the same villagers who stumbled upon them in the first place, their exploration is driven by a unique blend of courage and desperation. Each year, expeditions venture into the depths of the earth in search of the precious silk spun by the cavern's dangerous inhabitants.
For the Silk Hunters, this subterranean world holds a dangerous lure. It beckons with immense wealth and power, but it also a journey from which many never return . The serpent's treacherous paths, its deadly creatures, and its ever-present dangers make every descent a perilous gamble with one's own life.
Only the mad, the brave and the desperate walk these paths.
Baran Dal'ahar, Kaharan scholar
To set foot on earth no one has dared to venture, to see sights no soul has seen and bring forth its beauty - that is my calling.
Amir Al'Hadib, Silk Hunter
The Serpent's Maze
Countless silk hunter navigator's have made it their entire life's purpose to map the caverns beneath the Serpents Spine. So far, not one has succeeded and each expedition finds new caverns, twisting passages or hidden streams. Some even say the beating, glowing heart of the earth itself can be found in the labyrinth, promising infinite power to those who might be able to find it.
What a terrifying yet beautiful place. I can see why people would want to explore it and also why it is probably better to stay out. I want to know more about the blind sloths and giant worms! :D
