Brelish Bowl

Smokey with a Hint of Spice

As if they weren't already strange enough, I hear they make their bowls with salmon over there in that village across the lake. You'd best not get any strange ideas with your own culinary crafts. The classic chicken bowl is already a heavenly combination of smokiness and spice—no need to go fiddling with perfection.
— Brelish Bowl enthusiast and traditionalist
The Brelish Bowl, or Eilneqrī, is a meal that originates from Eilne in South Tellaiti, a region in the Empire of Pallernen that is home to the Brelish people. This quick and easy to prepare salad that's traditionally served in deep bowls has become a favourite throughout the empire, giving the realm's inhabitants a delicious treat to look forward to whenever their stomachs begin pining for food. The dish consists primarily of corn, black beans, a mix of leafy vegetables, finely chopped tomatoes and avocado, usually either some sort of fish or meat, all mixed together with some salt and whatever other seasoning the person cooking it can afford. The final touch is a roasted salsa-like condiment that's gives the Brelish Bowl a touch of heat, although spicier variants that feature chili peppers do also exist.

Core Ingredients

  • Black beans
  • Corn kernels
  • Leafy vegetables (baby spinach, rucola, etc.)
  • Tomatoes
  • Avocados
  • Condiment

  • Common Optional Ingredients

  • Meat or fish (traditionally chicken)
  • Boiled eggs
  • Chili peppers
  •

    The Classic Combo

Traditional Brelish Bowls were originally made using chicken as the main source of protein, but the manner in which it's cooked varies from family to family. Those looking to save on time can buy a cut from their local butcher—usually a nice lean breast—and then proceed to chop it into smaller pieces which can be quickly cooked on a pan. Smoking the meat is another favourite for many, adding to the richness of the taste.   Nowadays these iconic bowls are served on the streets of various large cities both in Brelish lands, but also other areas where their cuisine is sought after, such as the busy streets of Aûrkustel, the multicultural markets of Lotwerstá, and even in the cold and rocky city of Athe, where Brelish clerics often find themselves craving after a taste of home.

    Author's Notes

Here’s what I typically use to make it, along with a brief guide on how to slap it together. The convenience of canned beans and corn makes it a lot easier in our modern day and age than doing everything from scratch from fresh ingredients. The stuff used here is what I typically buy in Denmark, so you’ll, of course, have to figure out your own local equivalents for these products. The links provided will be to a page in Danish, so just have your browser translate it if you're interested in reading the product descriptions.   Whenever I normally prepare it, I tend to end up with enough for two portions. Feel free to mess around with the ingredients on your own to figure out what works best for you! What I do is fairly simple and I'm sure there are plenty of ways to make it better.   Ingredients:

  • Half a can of black beans (c. 200 g)
  • One small can of corn (c. 140 g)
  • Some roasted salsa
  • A handfull from a salad mix
  • Chicken breast (c. 280 g)
  • Around 5-8 pickled jalapeño slices
  • Fresh tomato (around 1-2 depending on the size)
  • An avocado

  • Instructions:
Cook chicken at some point. Open up the can of beans, toss it on a sieve and give them a wash to get the goop off, toss the beans then into a big bowl or pot where you'll end up tossing everything else before serving the meal. Toss the corn on the sieve as well and then just toss it around a bit to get some of the excess water off before merging the corn with the beans. Dice up a nice ripe avocado and the tomato(es) for the mix. Grab a handful of the salad leaves and slice 'em up into smaller pieces so that they mix better with the rest of the stuff. At this point you're pretty much done. Just need to add some salt or whatever other kind of seasoning you might like. I like to chop up a few bits of jalapeño as well for a little extra spice. Once all the ingredients are in your bowl or pot and you've added some salt just grab some forks or spoons or whatever else you might have and mix things around a bit and then find a nice bowl to serve it in. I usually add the salsa after I've served it in a bowl and keep the other half of what I've made as leftovers for the next day.

I added some details on how I've made it before in the author's notes section. It's really simple and there are probably ways to improve on it, but its quick and delicious for me :D

The intro quote reminds me of many things people have told me when I make new concoctions or try with making something using nontraditional ingredients. The Brelish Boel sounds amazing, and I'd like to try it and then experiment with different variations.
