Lain-Lethor

Overview

The second-largest continent in Facet, Lain-Lethor is a mostly temperate land with extreme climates in its upper reaches. Its population is large, but its population density lies somewhere between that of Xamas and Apresdas.  Southern Lain-Lethor (including the countries of Borea-Malun, Collome, western Tarrah, and southern Perch) is characterized by rolling hills, plains, and forests. The west contains patches of tropics and arid desert, while the east grows cold and rainy. Northern Lain-Lethor is unique, comprised of four lands each locked into a perpetual season (see The Shattered Sons).    Most important to note about Lain-Lethor is its long religious history. It was the ancient site of the Time of Piety, a period of over 200 years (83 F.E. - 316 F.E.) during which a goddess known only as the Towering Lady was worshipped. In 2250 F.E., her worship had a resurgence, along with the political rise of the Five-Point Authority. The current year of 2563 finds Lain-Lethor firmly in the grip of the Authority's leader, Lord Alamaeus of Gray.

History

Three hundred years ago, the land of Lain-Lethor was ruled by a Dark Court and a Light Court. These Courts were alliances formed in the wake of the War of the Seasons, an elven war that brought in foreign allies. Two elven countries (El'Gardel and Zampogna) wanted to re-annex the northern portion of Kintok as Elvish land, while another (Cantiivilan) believed it should be independent. The Dark Court, led from its seat in Xospon (then Kintok’s capital), consisted of Kintok, Perch, and the Outer Reaches, and was allied with Cantiivilan. The Light Court, ruled from Collome’s highest mountain by its centaur king, consisted of Borea-Malun and Collomé, and was allied with El’Gardel and Zampogna. After the war, which devolved to infighting among the Sons, the Elven countries became highly reclusive, leaving the Courts to broker an uneasy peace. These Courts existed for roughly 1000 years after their establishment in the war, only occasionally coming into conflict.    King Kalamus, the Light King in the year 2250 F.E., was a benevolent ruler. However, his brother Alamaeus had a religious epiphany that coaxed him to usurp Kalamus. With the help of supporters gathered over a matter of months, Alamaeus overthrew him. In the place of the Court system, Lord Alamaeus established the Five-Point Authority. All countries who had supported his coup became known as the Core Lands (including: Borea-Malun, Collome, Perch, and the City-States of Tarrah), and those that did not or chose not to involve themselves became known as the Far Lands (including: Kintok, the Shattered Sons, and the Outer Reaches). The Five-Point Authority, a unified theocratic government, provides certain intrastructural benefits to the Core Lands. A portal network for transportation, advancements in medical care, and general safety of the populace are just a few such benefits. Worship of the Towering Lady is not mandated, but proper veneration is expected, and tithes to Her temples are a part of the universal tax. The Authority has been called a surveillance state, and its presence is especially resented in the City-States of Tarrah, where an artifical magical construct called the ROOK watches the populace with its ever-seeing eyes.   The Far Lands do not receive the benefits - or the surveillance - implemented by the Authority in the Core Lands. Their resources are occasionally exploited by the Authority (worst among these exploitations is the enslavement of giants from the Outer Reaches), but on the whole, the Outer Reaches and the Shattered Sons are left to their own devices. That's how they prefer it. Kintok, on the other hand, was particularly displeased with this arrangement. As they were historically victims of attempts to annex and re-annex their land and nullify their culture, the populace was strongly against the idea of a unified government takeover. But their leader, Queen Rya, initially chose to support Alamaeus. Citizens deserted the army in droves, and she was driven out of the country after several assassination attempts. Lost and confused, the people of Kintok appointed a new leader, a prominent rebel against Rya Kasparov's regime. Following this, in the first few decades after the takeover, Kintok fought in an organized rebellion against the Authority. The rebellion came to be known as the Kevestok Coalition, and was headed from Itepsi (Kintok) in the north and Windham (City-States of Tarrah) in the south. The Duke of Stars, governer of Windham, created armies of warforged to supplement the rebel army, but after multiple devestations of his city, he chose to step back.
