Collomé (CALL-OH-MAY)

Overview

Collomé was once the highest seat of power in Lain-Lethor. The continent's southernmost country, it is covered in expansive grassy plains, rocky hills, and labyrinthian cave networks and mines. It is an integral part of the Core Lands (consisting of: Borea-Malun, Collome, Perch, and the City-States of Tarrah).   Because of Collomé's souther latitude, it is warm and pleasant. Its plains were once home to herds of centaur, though that time is past. It caves and underground mountains make ideal homes for dwarves and gnomes, which make up a large portion of the country's population.    Collomé's most famous natural formations are the Caves of Culder Collom, for which it is named. Half ancient cave network and half ancient dwarven mine, the Caves are the stuff of legend. The country's western forests, though not as impressive as the forests of Perch or the Shattered Sons, are also worth noting for their cursed nature.

History

For nearly a thousand years, Collomé was the seat of the Light Court, a hugely powerful alliance ruled by King Kalamus from the city of Brïl. It was a center of great industry, medical care, and military advancement, and due to its position nearest to the continent of Xamas, it was the port of arrival for all traveling across the Greater Pass.    Collomé's partner in the Light Court was Borea-Malun, and the Court's closest allies were the Elven nations of Zampogna and El'Gardel. These alliances formed many hundreds of years ago, in the War of the Seasons between the Elven nations and Kintok.   This changed when Lord Alamaeus, the brother of King Kalamus, took power by establishing the Five-Point Authority. Upon the King's death, Alamaeus had control of one of the most powerful countries on the continent. Rather than continue ruling from Brïl, he stripped the former capitol of its power and migrated to Twin Point in Borea-Malun. This may have been for a fresh start, or for the strong strategic position of Twin Point at the convergence of three rivers. Whatever the reason, Collomé was suddenly the afterthought of a bygone era, left in the hands of the traitorous Queen Rya.    Its capitol is now the city of Båckstock, a thriving metropolis with few ties to Collomé's history.

Population

Much of the population of Collomé has not changed since its days in the Light Court. The majority is made up in approximately equal parts of halflings, dwarves, gnomes, and humans, with goblins also residing under the ground and in the western forests. Centaur used to be a very large portion of the populace as well, until the Gazing Sickness around three hundred years ago. They are now endangered, though some herds still roam Collomé's plains.

Fauna

Large game to be found on the plains of Collome include wild horses and bison, while smaller animals tend to be of the burrowing type, such as foxes, ferrets, gophers, and moles. Many species of bat can be found underground.   Reptiles enjoy lounging on the rocks on the plains. Take particular care around brown snakes; the southern bark snake (nonvenomous) looks a great deal like its cousin, the Saint Mära's viper (venomous). Both are roughly twenty feet long and patterned in brown scales, but the viper has characteristic orange eyes.    Centaur were previously very common, but are now endangered thanks to the Gazing Sickness epidemic (note: centaur are a sentient species, but are listed here due to their unique conservation status).

Flora

Collomé is known for its many species of fungus found in its caves and mines, as well as for its widespread Greengrass. Its plains are famously a beautiful pastel green. The large, ancient rocks that dot the landscape are also covered in a variety of lichen, often harvested and refined for medicinal uses.   Its southern coast consists of rocky beaches, which are popular vacation spots in the summer.

Natural Resources

Collomé's ores, rocks, and gems are coveted throughout the continent and in Xamas as well (before Lain-Lethor was cut off from worldly contact by the Authority). Its large population of dwarves and winding underground caves have resulted in the largest mining export of any country in Lain-Lethor by a wide margin. Colloménian metals comprise most of the continent's armor and construction materials. Brïllig iron is famously strong and abundant, so it's highly affordable for its quality. Båckstock's mines are shallower and primarily used for the topaz (and other precious gem) deposits under the city, which can be pricier.    The Märalon river extends across the north of the country to the sea, making quick transport of mined goods easy to the southern City-States of Tarrah, as well as to the eastern coast of Borea-Malun.
