Perch

Overview

Thanks to a quirk of enchantment - perhaps something residual from the War of the Seasons one thousand years ago - Perch is perpetually rainy. Its tall pine forests drip constantly with water, lanterns providing most of the light those born there will ever see.   Perch is one of the Core Lands, an especially vital trade partner in magical and rare items. It is split into two portions: the Mainland (connected to the continent proper of Lain-Lethor) and the Eyeland. The Mainland is where the civilian population lives, and most have no reason (or desire) to ever visit the Eyeland. There are rumors of what happens on the Eyeland, but the only thing truly agreed upon is that the mysterious Bishop conducts his experiments there, while watching everyone in Perch with a scrutinizing gaze.

History

Once a part of the Dark Court, Perch accepted a position within the Core Lands in exchange for a peaceful surrender during the takeover of the Five-Point Authority. It was granted a certain degree of trust and independence in exchange for this, and continues to thrive. Though its original internal government of the People's Council was deposed (the Council moved to Mor'Bane, where it lives on in reduced form), the new mayoral system put in place at the capitol, Korlinn, did not offend most of the populace.   Some speculate that this is the original homeland of the Kenku, though others advocate that the strength of Kenku religion in the country's western end is simply due to fundamentalist zeal. Regardless, historians agree that Kenku have resided here since before the Unfractured Era, making Perch the homeland of the Kenku in Facet.   Perch's relationship with Kintok was once a close one, thanks to their mutual position in the Dark Court. Since the Authority's takeover, relations have been strained, though some claim that the city of Styx (which kept its alternate Kintoki name, STIC∩) still considers itself an ally of Kintok.

Population

Kenku make up the primary population (roughly a quarter of the total), but all manner of visibly nonhuman races live here. Aarakocra, Tortle, Tabaxi, as well as more commonly feared races such as tieflings, goblins, and dragonborn, get along well in the constant rain.

Fauna

Mundane crows and other birds love to nest in Perch's treetops, and many amphibians have grown to enjoy the damp earth. Many of the frogs here are poisonous or magical (or both) on contact, so watch what you touch. Furred beasts don't much care for the rain, but you might spot the occasional bugbear who wandered out of Borea-Malun.

Flora

The rich soil of Perch is said to be laced with strange magical properties, washed up from the Boiling Ocean to the west. This has resulted in hugely varied types of trees and plants, including bubble trees, egg plants, and trees whose leaves are parchment.

Natural Resources

In addition to the strange plants present here (able to be used for potions and medicine), Perch is known for two main exports: Perch stone and Korlish cloaks. Both are notoriously expensive. Perch stone is pitch black and smoother than glass, taken from the western shores against the Boiling Sea. The sea's heat is said to create this unique finish, and harvesting it without tarnishing its shine is difficult. The law university in Twin Point, Stitius, is famously made exclusively of Perch stone.   Korlish cloaks are rare not due to scarcity, but due to cultural significance. They are stitched from the feathers of Kenku, impervious to rain and very warm. They also aid the wearer in disappearing into the shadows. In some cities outside of Perch, they are banned; in others, they are simply impossible to buy, as Perch citizens don't make them for just anyone. The Little Mära river also provides a quick trade route with Borea-Malun, Collome, and Kintok (though trade with Kintok is frowned upon).
