Cabochon: Broad Strokes

With a whole WorldAnvil of several long articles, it can be difficult to ascertain actual concrete facts within this world. Here are some well known facts by the majority of Cabochoni residents. These facts are diegetic (known by characters within the world) and undisputed:   -Cabochon, named for a type of unfaceted gem, is comprised of two major continents (Oren and Ochita) separated by a narrow ocean. Most believe it to be a flat world with inhospitable areas along the eastern and western edges.   -Over 99% of halfling disappeared from the world one day. This event has caused a hot bed of conspiracy and sadness. As it is undisputed, most cabochoni use this event to align calendars (AH - After Halflings.)   -Cabochon currently is set during the decline of the Elven Empire, a Roman/French imperial stand in. It once encompassed most of the world but has now receded back into the elven Greylands. Comprised of and having its government made up entirely of elves, it is remembered for building infrastructure and stability at the cost of allegiance and deference. It is thought that the slow infertility plaguing the elves contributed to the faltering of the empire.   -Once a local menace, Sea Elves now dominate the ocean impeding trade between the two continents. They have constructed large floating 'Domains' comprised of derelict vessels/flotsam and have seized Median Island, an strategic ocean way point.   -Elven infertility has inspired many harrowing events. The tiefling genocide at Mephistal by the Golden Crusade being the most noteworthy. Many tieflings bare scars and missing limbs from the brutality of vengeful elves blaming their blood pacts for their decline.   -Remnants and ruins of ancient cultures dot the continents. Some of the most well known include the birdfolk and the berylfolk, and the ancient shortfolk. These places drip with superstition and allude to more sinister secrets buried in the past of the world.   -Dragonborn from the Far West seek to conquer the southern coasts and control trade on the Catseye. There is a Trojan-like conflict they mythologize between themselves and the berylfolk. According to myth, they were driven from their ancestral home of Beryl Island and reconquered it over two centuries ago.   -Duchanese gnomes race to replace the retreating Elven Empire with one built on trade, guns, and automatons. They are among several nations vying to fill this unstable void. They have formed a contentious pact with the displaced tieflings to imbue their creations with infernal enchantments. There is a contingent of tieflings that wish to reconquer their homeland in the wake of imperial collapse.   -Recently a dark sandstorm has swallowed most of the deserts of Oren and threaten to spread into more temperate populated areas at shocking speeds.
