Berylfolk

The beastfolk of Beryl Island are among the oldest extant species still in Cabochon. Speculation of the number of distinct berylfolk races continues to this day but currently remain uncertain.

The following beastfolk races have been confirmed as Berylfolk:
  • Grey
  • Hulk (formerly Cuni)
  • Dragonborn

  • *Dragonborn, while technically a berylfolk race, are not ordinarily organized into this category for any other than semantic reasons.

    Unconfirmed/Unclassified

Cabochon is host to a diversity of beastfolk throughout the ages that scholars have expressed uncertainty in classifying as 'true berylfolk.' Phylogeny and taxonomies express conflicting opinions on their exact origin or lineage of these species. Whether they are a relict population, endlings (last of a species), or extraplanar immigrants; here is a brief list of unverified Cabochoni beastfolk:

  • Ratling
  • Tabaxi
  • Aarakocra
  • Lizardfolk*

  • *Due to conflicting evidence and myths on Lizardfolk origins, it cannot be confirmed the species is indeed direct ancestors to modern dragonborn.

    Missing Species

Berylfolk mythology continuously refers back to the war between dragonborn and the rest of the species on the island. One common thread throughout these myths are the transformation of dragonborn into dragons alongside the creation of types of lycanthropy from the remaining berylfolk species. While unsubstantiated and assumed false, there are forms of lycanthropy that seemingly align with confirmed berylfolk races (i,e werewolves for Greys and werehares for Cuni). If this proves true, there are berylfolk species missing from the known records. These species may have gone extinct, evolved into something else, or perhaps never existed in the first place. The following lists forms of lycanthropy not yet correlated with a berylfolk species under this assumption:

  • Werebear
  • Wereboar
  • Wererat
  • Weretiger
