Roylians Ethnicity in Ardre | World Anvil

Roylians

The Roylians, sometimes called Royi, are those citizens of the Rift who live south of the Pass of Peril, in the Royina Foothills.   Of the two Kingsrifter peoples (the other being the Milosi, north of the Pass of Peril), the Roylians are considered the more rusticated, ignorant, and uncultured, being cut off from the Mortal Kingdoms of Monos. Yet paradoxically, their name connects them with an ancient, legendary people called the Roynasi, a mythical folk tied up with ancient Monosi identity. As such, the Roylians are simultaneously a subject of scorn and wonder. Monosi and Milosi alike look down on them as less sophisticated, yet many also romanticize them as the potential descendents of their magical forebears, who warred with the ancient Samayans and Terminallians.   The Roylians originally lived north of the Pass of Peril, but the great conflicts of the Century Wars would drive them south to seek Milosian protection. Not only did Bastis protect them, but they would eventually grant the Roylians there own land in the Royina Foothills, where they would live as hereditary lookouts against northern forces.   In the Foothills themselves, the Roylians seem to have little regard for the ancient Roynasi one way or the other. They favor simplicity in most things, and are known for clothing that imitates the southern fashions (absent the heavy furs). They are known for pinkish skin and sharp ears, though like all Milosians, Roylians have very diverse complexions. They have a reputation for large eyes and refined features despite their rural location, owing no doubt to their perceived connection with the Roynasi.
