Griin Ainros - 9th Known Ruler of Revellia

Called the Firebrand and the King Killer

King Griin Ainros

Reign: 723 RA - 732 RA
Wizards: Uithael Wonder, Hanwyth the Hostly, Fuia the Small   Called the Cold King come again, Griin began his reign at three-and-ten years, on the battlefield. He quelled the Battle at Great Cross through cunning, strategy, and might of arms, then charged the chiefs of the Graunts and the Beths to come to Aerwoth to answer for the death of King Redham. The Graunts ultimately answered for it, though the clan was not destroyed. Many have speculated about King Redham's death, how easily Griin forgave the killers of his father, and how he retained his father's Wizard, Uithael Wonder, despite her unremarkable ability. In later years, King Griin was sometimes called the King Killer. More often though, he was known as the Firebrand.   Mocked as the Green King in his youth (though never to his face), Griin quickly established himself as a dangerous force. At age fifteen, he ejected Uithael Wonder in favor of Hanwyth the Hostly, renowned for her piety. He then funneled resources to the continued construction of the Grand Hostel at Great Cross, and began a purge of Deinain worshipers that would be known as the Second Aercuadh (a reference to a mythical war against the Aernigh from ancient times).   Griin only took one wife, which was unusual at this point in Revellian history and generally seen as a further nod to Host Keeping. Queen Silve was a princess of Ethelbrand, and their marriage solidified an alliance between Revellia and Ethel, and particularly between the port cities of Aerwoth and Ethelbrand. Both grew wealthy off one another.   Silve and Griin sired seven daughters, but no sons. Griin turned to Hanwyth the Hostly, but she only instructed him to pray to the Hosts. Griin quickly grew frustrated with this counsel. So it was that when Lord Torien of the Marnocks of Malbrand rose up in rebellion against Host Keeping, King Griin sent Wizard Hanwyth to advise his Chief Justicar Kurnek in battle. It was unusual for a king to send his Chief Justicar to lead a war, and more unusual that Griin himself would eschew a chance to march. When Hanwyth was slain during the Battle of Nightfall (named for the river by which Malbrand stands), many whispered this was Griin's very intent.   Regardless, the king replaced Wizard Hanwyth with Fuia the Small, the former Wizard of the recently executed Lord Torien. Fuia was acquainted with Aernigh myths and customs, which were dismissed by most as foolish witchery. Yet it cannot be denied that, within a year of her coming to court, Queen Silve bore Griin his first of three sons.   In 732 RA, when his first son was only five years old, Griin marched his armies west to put down another Deinain rebellion. The Wulks of Dubraigh had publicly rejected the Hosts and stopped paying taxes, and even sent troops to Saolmoth (the traditional "gateway" between west and east) to stop any tax-collectors from passing. Griin left his Chief Justicar Kurnek and Wizard Fuia to watch after his wife and children as he went.   King Griin was slain in battle at Saolmoth. Legend says Oran, Chief of Wulk, slew him with his own ax.   The concept of regencies did not exist at this time, and Griin's children were too young to rule anyone. Griin's uncle Kurnek took the crown, ostensibly to protect the clan. At the same time, however, Oran of Wulk crowned himself king.   So the great Ainros dynasty seemed to have ended. And so began the First War of East and West.
"Of course, Griin's seven daughters are dismissed as fancy by any thinking person. The Firebrand died at the age of two-and-twenty, and the mere attempt to sire seven daughters and three sons in such a narrow timeframe would have resulted in a dead queen. Far more likely, the seven princesses and their fantastic escapes from Kurnek's clutches were pixie tales born from two or perhaps three daughters. In this wise, even Griin's three sons must be eyed with skepticism."
