Breyv Chief Justicar Military Formation in Ardre | World Anvil

Breyv Chief Justicar

A counsel position, serving under lords and high lords in Milos.   Historically, what is now the Chief Justicars were the highest military servants of kings and lords, commanding their elite soldiers, called Breyvs. As knighthood found its way into the Peninsula, Breyvs evolved into the private military serving under the Chief Justicar. In time, the Chief's supremacy was supplanted by High Magi, who serve as the prime minister to the high lords of Milos. Chief Justicar's and Breyvs vanished from most settlements. Now, they serve as the private, elite soldiers serving under great lords, often used for more secretive work, and who function as both judge and executioner whenever outside their liegelord's immediate power.   The term "breyv" is said to come from the Aernigh word for "judge." Others, however, suggest the term comes from "Brevessar," and that the position itself evolved from old Viisianar governors who brought elements of Brevessarian culture south during the Orckid Conquest.
