Breyv Justicar

Historically, Breyvs were professional soldiers of Milos, specializing in at least three weapons. In time, Breyvs evolved into the elites serving under the Chief Justicar, who served as second-in-command under a lord. As knighthood spread throughout the Peninsula, Chief Justicars and Breyvs diminished in commonality and power. Nowadays, they are the private guards of high lords, more often serving clandestine purposes that cannot be trusted to knights or guardsmen.   Breyv Justices are distinguished from other warriors by the ceremonial torqs they wear around their necks. These are typically forged of gold, though poorer lords may be unable to supply such even to their elite guards, instead using bronze or even iron. Breyvs wealthy enough for full armor typically do not wear these torqs into battle, replacing them with a gilt chain around their gorget or mailed neck.   The term "breyv" is said to come from the Aernigh word for "judge," and indeed the Royal Breyvs often serve as judge and executioner whenever outside their king's presence. Others, however, suggest the term comes from "Brevessar," and that the position itself evolved from old Viisianar governors who brought elements of Brevessarian culture south during the Orckid Conquest.
