Swining Settlement in Ardre | World Anvil

Swining

Lord: Sorley, chief of Clan Swinnerd
Patron Host: Katriss, Host of Hearth and Home   Swining is the pig capitol of Revellia. Its primary purpose is the production of pigs in mass, to fill economic requirements.   For most of its history, Swining was called Great Cross. It served as the crossroads between the great settlements of Revellia: Berleigh, Aerwoth, Revellia, and Saolmoth. Each of these four settlements have vied for supremacy in the canton at various times, and many times Great Cross would serve as the battleground. As such, the town never rose to power itself.   This would change in the New Age, when the High Lord of Revellia designated the town for mass swine production. It was renamed Swining, and a new great clan was created to oversea it: Clan Swinnerd.   SWining rests at the northern extreme of the Ithir Plains, the most fertile region of Revellia. Most of the Plains fall under the domain of Saolmoth and Revellia, however, so Swining gains relatively little wealth from its property. What fields it controls are used principally to feed their swine. To the north are the Sorley Woods, a small forest inhabited by foxes, squirrels, and other small fauna.   Swining has expanded greatly in the New Age, covering several new miles. Most of the city now exists outside its walls: fields covered in daub-and-wattle houses and small huts. Inside the walls, the city proper is mostly two-story timbered homes where those central to swine production have made small fortunes for themselves. At the city center are several manse towers, three stories tall, made of limestone. Lord Sorley's manse, though only a holdfast, is five stories high and built of granite.   Due to its central location, Swining is influenced by its four neighbors: Urudunite and Khabarese influence from Berleigh, Western influence from Saolmoth, Ethel and Liddinawth influence from Aerwoth, and Eastern influence from Revelback. Having been leveled and rebuilt so often, Swining has little identity of its own, yet in many ways it has a greater cultural hub than either of the major ports. Its central role in the swine market, combined with the novelty of the ruling family, makes Swining a subject of envy from all those around them.

Government

Because of the relatively minor influence of Clan Swinnerd, landless lords have significantly more influence in Swining than in other major towns. This makes Swining more similar to an oligarchy, though it still owes allegiance to Revelback.

Industry & Trade

Swining deals almost exclusively in the mass production, sale, and transportation of sows.

History

Legend credits Great Cross as the spot where Ullagh the Walker finished his southern pilgrimage that brought the Norrish into Milos.
