Aerwoth

The Ancient Seat of Majesty

Lord: Ithern, chief of Clan Padwell
Patron Host: Wilminar, Host of Venoms   The northeastern-most settlement in Revellia, Aerwoth was the capital of the canton for several centuries. Legends say it served as a bulwark against Ethel raiders in the Age of Dragons. It stands high upon the coast of the Barrow Sea, on the Cliffs of Ardail. A harbor has been dug out at the base of the cliffs: expanded over time, it can now dock over two dozen ships.   Aerwoth, castle and town, is surrounded by a great, five-sided wall, each with archer's towers erected upon them. Even the coastal edge has a wall, used to repel attacks from Ethel before the Late Royal Age. Legends say the ancient Liddinawths and Vainans were known to accost their cliffs on occasion as well.   Perhaps because of its ancient lineage and historical import, most of Aerwoth's houses are of older design. The wealthy live in conservative stone buildings, and the peasantry erect little wattle and daub huts. Virtually none of these homes have more than one floor. Instead of extra floors, the wealthiest lords build their manses to cover enormous space, leaving the peasants cramped ever closer to the edges of the city walls. Motivation for lords to lease land outside the walls is surprisingly high in recent times with the longstanding peace between Revellia and Ethel.   The castle town has one of the largest hostels in Revellia. Called the Ancient Hostel, it is considered the best place for new hostesses to be trained, and often entertained clerics from the Host Lands and sometimes even the Holy Isle of Acciano in Monos.   Being so close to Ethel, Aerwoth is also one of the most culturally diverse settlements in Revellia. The legendary Clan Ainros ruled from Aerwoth for many generations and the Liddinawth blood of the royals and their coterie can be seen in many residents. The Eysch have established a presence in the past few generations, and Khabarese nobles visiting from Urudun have left their mark on the populace as well. Even the occasional person of Vainan extraction can be found, though more often only stopping back on a sail south around the Peninsula toward the Triangle Sea.   Aerwoth's citadel is called Castle Magg, though nowadays most simply call it Aerwoth Castle. Built principally of limestone, the Castle is surrounded by its own wall, a circular construct built sometime after the Great Collapse; during the Lost Age, most suppose. Though only four stories tall, the expansive castle towers over the town.   For good and ill, a sense of age hangs over Aerwoth. Even the newer elements feel ancient and demand reverence. There are a number of celebrations unique to Aerwoth, many of them honoring the ancient Deinain. Few if anyone actually worship or even believe in the Deinain; the celebrations are more tradition than anything, and are often tied to the seasons. Celebrations of the Hosts coincide with many of these traditional festivities, but they are notably more austere and generally only observed by the most pious of citizens. The most popular celebration in Aerwoth is Filain's Feast, celebrating the start of spring. It features magic and dances, and for this is considered to have a taste of wickedness to it.   Though much smaller and less significant than it once was, Aerwoth still has a place of honor as the home of the revered Clan Ainros. As such, their colors (white and red) are seen frequently in local decorations. The current rulers of Aerwoth, Clan Padwell, fly colors of blue and sea green, and to use their colors in decoration is generally seen as a statement. The Padwells are a relatively young clan, and there are some foolish enough to lament their rise to power. Some dream that scions of Clan Ainros are still out there, and that someday they will return to claim their charmed crown and set Revellia to rights.   Directly north of Aerwoth are the Fens of Fuien, sometimes called the Blood Bogs, where supposedly many battles were fought between Revellians and Ethels, turning the soil rotten. A road has been built moving around the Fens, northwest to Kelisfield, an Ethel settlement only forty miles away. The road, called the Peace Way, was paved in the New Age as a symbol of the peace between the two cantons.

History

According to legend, Aerwoth was originally the home to a clan of bogarts. They terrified locals and butchered their livestock until Connard Cliffhanger arrived from the Sea and conquered them with his armies. Connard Cliffhanger was supposedly half-Hadrashi, the ancient monster-people who came from the sea, and part of the Deinain mythos. Naturally, modern citizens don't believe in the Hadrash or the Deinain, but Connard Cliffhanger remains a folk hero. Legends often equate him to Clan Ainros, calling him a mythical king who will return to save Aerwoth someday.
