Fuia the Small

Wizard Fuia Urruck

Wizard under Griin Ainros and Kurnek Redhammer the Usurper   Fuia was born of a line of medicine women in the central Fiirwood. The Urruks were supposedly of Mornal descent from the Late Orckid Empire's time in the Peninsula, and were generally shunned until their embrace of medicines sometime during the Lost Age. Fuia was part of this tradition, the second of four daughters (and two sons, both younger) trained in the tradition.   Fuia was more adventuresome than her sisters, and would often stray outside the Fiirwood in search of roots and potion parts. Several times she supposedly risked death from passing bandits or grimlings prowling near the forest's edge, and Maiar the Blind claims her contemporaries often chastised her for wandering the woods at night.   At ten years, Fuia met Wizard Saarva of Malbrand when she came into the Fiirwood seeking men for a militia. Fuia followed her back to the castle and impressed herself into the Wizard's service. She was very old for an apprentice, but still achieved her title in early adulthood. At five-and-twenty she was called upon to serve King Griin and Aerwoth. It was assumed her wisdom of the Deinain and woods magics would aid in the conception of a son. Whether true or not, Griin and Silve bore the first of three sons within the first year of Fuia's service.   Like her predecessors, Fuia did not have a sharp eye for governance or battle, but King Griin trusted her implicitly with domestic matters, including the managing of his ten children. Five years into her service, when Griin marched west to put down the Western Rebellion, he explicitly named Fuia in charge of his three sons. Griin would never return from that march.   There are numerous tales of how Queen Silve snuck her seven daughters out of Aerwoth after Kurnek Redhammer the False King took the throne. Fuia is said to have figured into many of these, true or false. More solidly certain is her hand in orchestrating the flight of the three princes.   Being lawful heirs to the slain King Griin, Silve's three sons were more closely watched, and therefore had to escape all at once. Fuia supposedly showed them a secret passage to the undercliff harbor and even distracted King Kurnek with a vague report of Western movements. The eldest of Griin's sons died in the escape, but the other two gained the small ship Cruel Care and sailed to Ethel. In some versions of the tale, Fuia sent a warship after them that was sunk by a sudden storm, for which she too is credited.   Fuia remained in service to Kurnek Redhammer throughout the War of East and West, claiming loyalty to Aerwoth itself. Even after Kurnek was deposed and hanged, Fuia continued to serve the Bogwells during their brief time as the lords of Aerwoth.   Wizard can be a dangerous position to hold, yet Fuia the Small survived past seventy years. Tragically, she would die failing to repel the invading fleet of Garland the Conqueror, the grandson of one of the two princes she had helped to escape. One of the invading ships rammed into the harbor at speed, collapsing parts of it and drowning several of the household. Fuia was among them. Like the rest, she was left to sink to the bottom of the sea, unmarked and forgotten.
