Garland I Ainros - 13th Known Ruler of Revellia

Called the Conqueror

King Garland Ainros

"Like an avenging spirit of the past did Garland the Conqueror and his fleet crash upon the Cliffs of Ardail, visiting such a bloody price upon the allies of the Wulks as would echo throughout Revellian history."
Reign: 774 RA - 802 RA
Wizards: Elisel the Enchantress, Anna the Pretender   Garland was widely heralded as a hero, and his few critics were quickly silenced by the populace. There were exceptions in the West, of course, especially those few who dwelt in the Fiirwood and still worshiped the Deinain. Garland paid lip service to these ancient gods, but no more than that, and there were still those who considered him a threat to their beliefs.   Overall though, Garland's reign was a glorious one. Festivals were funded from the profits of the Green Isle every year on the day of his ascension, the Grand Hostel grew significantly (though it was not finished in his lifetime), and the king would go on grand adventures into the Fiirwood like the legendary Tranton of Gall. Garland sought mythical beasts and treasure, though, not brides. Garland already had a queen.   Though a mere boy when he took the throne, Garland had been wed with a prince on the way. Hwel'Ynwel, a fourth daughter of the High Monarch of Liddinawth, had married the king in his exile, winning him the small contingent of Liddinawth soldiers that helped secure the crown. This was a time when Revellia was still mostly filled with ghast-skinned descendants of the early Orrish, and they found the earthen-skinned queen and her brethren to be exotic and amazing, reminding them of the long-past Viisianari that had once ruled over them with powerful magics. To be sure, the Liddinawths were terrifying too, and many said they worshiped the sun like savages and made blood sacrifices like the ancient Aernigh, yet the queen and king were both so charming, mystifying, gracious and beloved, that even the most unfriendly Liddinawth was treated regally by most; save those, of course, who hated the king.   Even more marvels than these came from the return of Ainros. The Green Isle, as well as birthing the port of Souwoth and the holdfast of Aintorq (and therefore supporting two new great clans), also bore a strange mountain folk called the Evergreen People. Many whispered the Evergreen were immortal, a holdover from a time before time began, and that they held secrets to eternal life. Others said they were savages with milk faces, hairy and pelted, with brows like cliffs. They spoke their own tongue called Evergreen, and though peaceful would refuse to leave their mountain homes, choosing to live amongst constant frost and snowfall.   Yet even there the wonders did not cease. Queen Hwel'Ynwel was a proud woman who seemed to look with disdain on Revellia and even refused to learn the local languages, yet still she won the hearts of the people with extraordinary gowns made from Liddinawth silks and velvets, extraordinary wines of Liddinawth vintage, and an amazing menagerie brought from her father's palaces. Many came to gawp and goggle at the strange beasts, birds, and fish, and the crown charged them for the privilege. It was said that Clan Ainros was as wealthy as Ethel for a time.   By and large, it was a time of great prosperity and peace. Rebellions in the West continued for a few years, culminating in Aormek's Rebellion, wherein the new lord of Dubraigh, the very man who had taken the castle for Garland, rose up for the Deinain, supposedly by the insistence of his lady wife. Yet he could not summon sufficient numbers. The war lasted nearly three years, but was mostly raids and skirmishes with relatively few eastern losses. Many considered it doomed from the start. Aormek was slain in his own castle by a mere squire, and Clan Eskmai was returned to lordship.   King Garland died of a stroke in 802 RA at three-and-forty years. He had grown somewhat stout after his fortieth year, having abandoned adventure for feasts and balls. Some put it about that his foreign queen had poisoned him, but this was dismissed as the envy of rock worshipers (meaning the Deinain). The throne passed to Garland's first son, who bore his name.
