Garland II Ainros - 14th Known Ruler of Revellia

Called Garland the Glorious

King Garland II Ainros

"Glorious he may have been, yet few would deny that Garland the Second was no king. He preferred revels to ruling, and would let feuding lords scream themselves hoarse and come to blows before making a decision that might set one against him."
Reign: 802 RA - 837 RA
Wizards: Anna the Pretender, Helena to Hand, Agathe the Elder   Garland the Glorious did his utmost to maintain the fame of his father's reign, but he would prove to be more interested in reputation than running the canton. The most famous part of his rule, however, was his taking a second wife. The tradition of multiple wives was still alive in some parts of western Revellia, but it was long extinct not only in the east, but in Ethel and Liddinawth, two places that had become greatly influential in the Second Rule of Ainros.   This resulted in two potential heirs: Garland (later Garland III) with his first wife Queen Skal'Izel, and Erick with his second wife Messenger. Young Garland was supported by his mother Queen Skal'Izel and later his grandmother Hwel'Ynwel (Queen Skal'Izel was her niece, and would die on a ship set to visit Liddinawth), while Erick was of course supported by his mother Queen Messenger. Against their own will, the two princes were eventually forced into the conflict known as the First Brothers Rebellion. Garland II consistently made the choices that required the least of him, for which history would treat him poorly.   Garland II had a remarkable need to be liked, which frequently manifested in a refusal to make bold choices. Many were shocked when he took a second wife, not only due to the meager benefits it brought or Messenger's relatively low standing, but because it was so out-of-character for him to do anything controversial. The only other time he could be said to truly stand firm on anything was his adamant refusal to take a side during the First Brothers Rebellion. He even recused himself from the negotiations that followed the death of Prince Erick, his firstborn son and chosen heir, when he was finally forced to select an heir.   Garland the Glorious would reign for about four more years after the end of the First Brothers Rebellion. These years were peaceful but painful, and the festivals did little to recover the lost crops, nor did they bring back the men who died in the battles or the children who starved in the Winters. Moreover, his dedication to supposed neutrality ultimately accomplished nothing. Prince Erick died, and when Garland himself passed, the throne did not fall to Erick's son, but rather was seized by the King's surviving son, Garland the Grim.
