Dubraigh Settlement in Ardre | World Anvil

Dubraigh

Lord: Ingus, chief of Clan Sirtal
Patron Host: Fairess, Host of Fires     Meaning "Cold Harbor," Dubraigh has served as a vital waypoint in maritime trade between the Great Satari Kingdoms and the Eastern Realms, ever since the destruction of Urudun's ports during the Khabarese Crusade. It stands just north of the Shipwright Forest, a small woodland separating the town and the great Fiirwood that runs along the southern coast of the Peninsula.   Though minor compared to other ports of the Triangle Sea, Dubraigh is the greatest settlement in western Revellia; some argue the only settlement, after the fall of Malbrand. Dubraigh features great limestone walls protecting its harbor as well as its central manses and citadel. An enormous shantytown has emerged beyond the walls, populated by people wishing to benefit from the trade, as well as those who have fled western wars, bandit-kings who ravage the wilds, and of course the ghosts and monsters that supposedly haunt the Fiirwood to the south. Dubraigh has been embroiled in its fair share of conflicts, but it has not often served as the site of actual battles, so the peasantry of the great shantytown are generally considered to be safe from war, though not from the deadly winters.   The town is called "Cold Harbor" for good reason. Though not frequently, it has been iced over in long winters, and many traders who sail around the Peninsula stop there only grudgingly, preferring the civility of Khabarese ports and the warmth of Ethel harbors. Yet they oft have no choice, and thus does Dubraigh grow wealthy.   The manses within Dubraigh's walls are diverse. Many chiefs have grown wealthy at different times and built after the current fashions, and despite the relative savagery of Milos in general and Revellia in particular, being a port grants Dubraigh cultural imports from Khabar, Monos, and northern Milos, as well as occasional influences from Vaina , Liddinawth , and even Zalja . It is instead the shantytown that, ironically, is more uniform in appearance, being built by the desperate and poor who have not the resources to bring their relatively mean diversity with them.   The citadel of Dubraigh is officially titled the Fiirduun, or "Cold Fort," but it is more often called the Limestone Citadel, a term laid upon it generations back by a visiting Vainan lord. It is a near-square fortress of four stories that lacks its own walls, but features well-windowed archery towers at each corner, as well as an excess of murder-holed gargoyles along the parapets and a central tower, rounded, with more archery windows. The Dubraighi standard, flying from the center of the tower, is believed to be the largest in Revellia.   Like all of western Revellia, Dubraigh is strongly influenced by the Deinain. Mockingly called stone worship by Host Keepers and Satariai alike, followers of the Deinain do not seem to have any uniform rituals or practices beyond a special veneration for sharing meals: those who dine together are said to be forever bound, and enemies will of course refuse to share repast of any kind. The ruling clans of Dubraigh will, usually, pay public obeisance to the Host of Hosts, but many are said to worship the Deinain secretly. Easterners will oft accuse these clans of holding secret blood sacrifices and singing spells to the Moon like werewolves.

History

According to legend, the Cold Harbor was built by a half-Hadrashi prince who escaped from the seas and wished to defend his people from the monsters beneath the waves.
