Ingus Sirtal

Lord Ingus Sirtal

Chief of Clan Sirtal. Lord of Dubraigh.   Lord Ingus is oft called the Lovelorn, a reference to Tranton of Gall, the legendary king from the Lost Age. He is said to be the first Western lord in centuries to have been born in the Fiirwood, something not seen since the Wulks first emerged from the great Frozen Forest and built what is now Dubraigh. His mother, Lady Dana Ruthwell of Atford, was fiercely independent and an avid hunter, and oft traveled south into the Frozen Forest with her coterie of women hunters, called the Moon Maids. It was during one such journey, when she was but eight months into her pregnancy, that Ingus came early. She and her child were closely looked after, however, with some old rumors claiming they were saved by a woods witch before returning to Dubraigh healthy and happy. Lady Dana would archly deny these rumors, pointing out that a dozen women did not require special care to look after a new baby, even one that came so early.   To his face, young Ingus was called the Sad Little Lord, though behind his back they called him Squaller and Crybaby. He was said to weep at the slightest provocation, and his master at arms feared he would never be a warrior, as even the faintest bruise would render him insensate for the day. He was coaxed, encouraged, and outright shamed for this disposition, yet nothing seemed to fix the matter, and some began to look thoughtfully upon his little brother Ognas, three years younger but already bigger, stronger, and fiercer. Stormcloud, they called him, for he was ever boasting and cheering and roaring in the yard.   To this day, no one knows what finally brought a change about in young Ingus, save that manhood must have settled on him during his adolescence. He became respectable with sword and spear, though he would never be as great as his brother, and came to respond to blows with neither weeping nor curses. The Silent Knight, some called him. Ingus would never be dubbed, but he was prepared to squire for Sir Hernegh Aerrin in the Fourth Brothers Rebellion, but his father Lord Barchus (called Barchus Bellows) was slain in an early skirmish against Clan Odon. There was great turmoil in Dubraigh following this. Ingus greatly desired to take the field and prove his valor, and in truth many hoped the same. Some genuinely loved the boy and desired that he distinguish himself, while others hoped to wash off the stain of Squaller, that their future lord be remembered as a warrior. Others, no doubt, hoped that Ingus might suffer a fate similar to his father's, passing the chiefdom to the more robust Ognas. Lady Dana was firmly against sending the boy to war, though toward the end of the conflict, Ingus was sent out with a small force to hunt down a band of deserters, and it was said the young lord served ably in this. Rumors claim he did not want to execute the deserters once they had been subdued, but it is equally likely this was mere talk from those who remembered his boyhood.   Lord Ingus would not be remembered as a coward, though sadly his rule is most often noted for Dubraigh's descent as a major port in the Triangle Sea, slowly becoming supplanted by Madport in Bastis and Darkwoth on Ice Island. Lord Ingus has revived Deinain worship greatly in the area, likely due to the anti-hostly influence of his Satari mother.
