Loffia

"Dad, it's the king's soldiers, they're coming this way! What if they find the gold I stole?"   "Don't be scared, boy. There are only three things you never want to have on you: the Black Teachings, the gods' artifacts, and loffia.

Loffia, also known as Te'olarena (Xivi: !,ijy), Lightning Weed or Lolly Fiala (among other names), is an annual flowering plant bearing psychoactive fruit, indigenous to the Noffet Marshes. Human and divine interventions have produced numerous different strains for various uses, ranging from industrial to medical to religious. Though, the plant's popularity has grown significantly over the years, being trafficked by Noffet's crime families as a highly-prized recreational drug.   Daemiyon - the god of thought - presumably created it during the to control human minds and turn them against each other.

Properties

Loffia is a plant species of the Naffilis genus, a short-day flowering plant with three sexes (male, female and hermaphrodite). The male pollenizes the female and hermaphrodite, after which it expires. The latter two produce scores of seeds as a result. It has an average growth cycle of five months during Noffet's warm season.
Loffia plants produce a substance called daemilomotanol (DML). The in humans absorbs the DML chemicals, causing mental, physical, and sometimes reality-altering effects. There is much yet unknown about this major system and its functionality.   Leva'azanoid (LZD) is the second most potent chemical. It provides no apparent psychoactive effects but can sometimes reduce high anxiety levels. It most often makes up a minuscule percentage of the chemical equation of the plant. Higher quantities may prove lethal to humans.

Cultivation

Loffia plants require long hours of sunlight and high humidity levels, making the Noffet Marshes the optimal location for cultivation. Some strains have been primarily bred to endure the climate of the Albian grasslands, but they produce little yield and of unsatisfactory quality in comparison.   As the female plants produce the most yield for drug-type loffia, feminized seeds are always in high demand among farmers.
Growth Stages

Loffia Plants
Growth stages of Electric Moon strain by rikia

Loffia seedlings have to be grown in a hot and humid place, deprived of all sunlight. This stage is crucial for the survival of the plant. The wetlands are full of areas of dense flora, which provide this natural shade. Farmers opt to accommodate the seedlings in a dark room.   A loffia plant requires over 15 hours of light per day to develop correctly in its vegetative stage. Any less would halt the plant's mass growth and trigger the transition into its final flowering stage.   The plant achieves its divine appearance with the flowers' blossoming, correlated with the specific strain type and the DML:LZD ratio and percentage.

Nutrients
Any loffia farmer would do well to imitate the environment of Noffet's wilderness. That includes giving the proper nutrients that naturally come from other plants and the swamps' enriched soil.

Diseases & Pests
Loffia serves as very nutritious food for animals, and it draws many predators. Farmers are advised to take necessary precautions, i.e., releasing moon mantises in the gardens to prey on the pests.

Fealty
Surviving as a farmer in Noffet involves more than simply producing high-quality yield. Every crime family has its territory, and each farmer needs a permit to grow. This process of subjecting oneself to a family's boss is called Fealty.
Shroud - Lamia Connection
Many independent farmers attempt to grow loffia illegally in hopes of evading taxation. When their loffia plants on their hidden farms blossom and exhibit divine appearances, they are fed with shroud. Since shroud protects from the gods' influence, it masks the bright transformation of the flowering. It is sold by a few powerful lamias who import it from Gallana Amon.

Uses

Loffia has long been used in many ways, placing it as the second most traded plant in the Albian Kingdom.
Industrial
Above all, loffia has dominated the fiber industry in Album since the third century. Its fiber's strength alongside the plant's plentiful and quick yield has overwhelmed the competition.   A Non-Exhaustive List of Industrial Products:   Paper, clothing, construction material, textiles, beverages (i.e., milk), oil (for lamps or paints), levitation gear, pet food, etc.
Medical
As a medicine, it usually comes in the form of dry fruit explicitly cured for ingestion or ointment for direct skin application.   Loffia fruit are said to reduce ailments like nausea, insomnia, chronic pain and lower the chances of Mavet's Vines and Essa's Touch.   However, the use of Loffia plants as medicine is not officially permitted within the kingdom's borders. Therefore, knowledge of the positive effects of the drug is limited at best.

Religious
The use of Loffia as a reality-altering drug has been documented in a small number of ruins across the land. Some claim that the use of specific strains provides a bridge to the higher plains of the gods. Other records allude to its use in burial rights and shamanic ceremonies.
Recreational
Despite its partial illegality and potential death punishment, loffia is among the most-used recreational drugs across Album, falling behind brown sugar and alcohol. The preferred method of using the drug is by smoking it or by turning it into wax and rubbing the body's central points.

Desirable effects of loffia may include:
spiritual alleviation, profound thoughts, and short-term foresight.   Adverse effects may include:
short and long-term memory loss and quite a large appetite.   * Although an overdose is highly unlikely, drugs of a questionable source may contain dangerous levels of LZD.   ** Withdrawal from a loffia-related addiction may accompany light symptoms of mood-swings and involuntary short-distance teleportation.

History

Like all other historical records before the mortal age, dates are inconsistents and specific details for events are often unreliable. According to legends during EIW, the gods Daemiyon, Lomot, Leva, and Ma'azan devised a plan to turn the tide against the gaining humans. They each influenced a part of the human equilibrium in an attempt to off-balance them and win the war.   Daemiyon's choice was to corrupt loffia - the human's livelihood.   It is said that the other gods were so impressed by Deamiyon's genius that each of them touched the plant in turn, creating many divine strains with supernatural properties. Terrified by the horrors it unleashed, the humans had to take extreme measures to avoid the plant's perils.
Prohibition

Are you smoking loffia, or is Daemiyon smoking you?
— Albian phrase

Anti-Loffia Poster
Anti-Loffia Poster by rikia & Yurii
With the dawn of the mortal age, one of the first restrictions King Lotov II placed upon Album was the ban of loffia. Plants all over the land were uprooted and burned, farms were shut down, sellers and buyers were apprehended.   Loffia was given frightful names like Lightning Weed and Lolly Fiala in hopes of discouraging the population.   The prohibition era lasted for well over three hundred years. Even so, one province refused to give up the plant, monopolizing its production and distribution in the kingdom.   The people of Noffet's Marshes were intent on preserving the plant that originated from their wetlands. This eventually resulted in the Albain kingdom declaring civil war.

Album's first civil war

Once more, the gods have turned us against each other. Fear not, citizens of Noffet, salvation is at hand!
— King Lotov Albis IX - declaring war on Noffet
The War on Loffia was a set of bloody campaigns the kingdom had waged on the Noffet Marshes. Their official intention was to free the wetlands from Daemiyon's influence and liberate its people. However, some high-ranking generals profess to ulterior motives, namely the loffia production occupation by deposing Noffet's Moffia.   By utilizing the divine strains' effects, Noffet managed to gain an offensive advantage. This, in addition to the marshes' treacherous terrain, drove back the kingdom's army. In the end, the two sides settled on a truce. The Dae Treaty allowed Noffet to continue to grow the plant in exchange for placing some restrictions and twenty percent of the collective profits going directly to the throne.
Noffet's Moffia
Five prominent familial organizations control Noffet, each with its own territory. Together, they represent the supreme council that governs the surrounding area - the Moffia. Following the end of the civil war, Album's kings have always tried to avoid any further conflict with the families, leading to a sort of automation of Noffet.   Despite constant diplomatic efforts, peace treaties between the bosses often fall apart and lead to internal turf wars.

Popular Strains

by rikia

'Electric Moon'
  • legal to grow, illegal to sell or buy

  • The only drug-type strain to be legalized throughout the kingdom with the Dae Treaty. Contains low amounts of DML and low electrical voltage.

    Bud 3

    by rikia

    'Love Forsaken'
  • illegal to grow, illegal to sell or buy

  • A delicate strain that requires attentive nurturing to produce yield. When ingested in its 'Love' phase can generate a state of mind of great joy. Its counter appearance of 'Forsaken' can cause immense grief and has led to suicide in a few cases.

    by rikia

    'Gallawood Kush'
  • illegal to grow, illegal to sell or buy

  • A particular strain cultivated with high quantities of shroud from Gallana Amon. Induces lucid dreams and even Tenuma trances for adapted humans.

    Bud 1

    by rikia

    'Black Zombie'
  • legal to grow, legal to sell and buy

  • Some people believe the Black Zombie's strain gets you an audience with the goddess of decay herself. Those she deems worthy receive her influence, while those unworthy perish. In truth, the strain's buds contain lethal quantities of LZD and are treated as toxic waste. However, the plant's fibers are the strongest among the species and are sought after by many industries.

    Bud 5

    by rikia

    'Daemiyon's Revenge'
  • illegal to grow, sell, buy or own

  • The weapon the god of thought created to brainwash humans. Considered the most dangerous of the strains. Extremely illegal, any amount of possession is liable with the death penalty.

    by rikia

    'Za'haph Gold'
  • illegal to grow, legal to sell and buy

  • Also called 'Money Tree', this strain's fruit produce special chemicals, changing the composition to a miniature golden head. The heads are used as a currency around Noffet. Growing 'Money Trees' is strictly forbidden.

    'Ma'azan's Lettuce'
  • Extinct

  • Used as one of the offensive strains by Noffet fighters during the civil war. The god of horizon's strain remains a mystery as to its specific effects. Testimonies from the battlefield claim it imbued its users with a blued aura. Their movements seemed to defy logic, walking through physical objects and stepping on air. The strain was eradicated as agreed upon with the Dae Treaty at the end of the war.

Fun article to read. You managed to make so many hidden remarks to the real world with the names and such. The art you added especially with the changes colors was very well done! Nice that you also gave it a name in your language. But best of all I the sentence : "Withdrawal from a loffia-related addiction may accompany light symptoms of mood-swings and involuntary short-distance teleportation. " I am now picturing people randomly teleporting everywhere :D

Fantastic work on the art, the varieties of loffia (everything from paper to GOLD!), and the conflicts surrounding it are very detailed. The definition of the name of the plant might be my favorite part--other than the interference of gods for the different strains...and that propaganda poster, which is perfect. <3

Anything from the absolutely amazing art, the very different version of the plant, its numerous and highly diverse uses, the fact that it was created as a weapon by the gods, the fact that a civil war was fought over it, and how the article references other articles in your world (Black Zombie) all make for a truly amazing article.   Absolutely stellar work rikia, I am truly impressed :D   Also, I had quite the laugh at the withdrawal symptom of short-range teleportation, as spatial displacement is certainly a very unusual form of a "drug trip" ^_^

Oh wow, so many things to say! First of all, the art is amazing- that poster especially really helps to bring into the world. Second of all, so many details!!!   You've managed to really fill this article with information not only about the plant and its uses, but also about the world itself, every two sentence has some new information to learn which is (to me) just great :D

    Grammar and Syntax

So quick disclaimer, I am not well versed in grammar so most of this goes off of "vibes" and "habits" rather than like. Actual grammatical knowledge. Anyway here I go!

Overall the text is really well written, you manage to pass off information (and quite technical information too) really easily, without overloading the reader (I personally have a low attention span so the fact that you managed to draw it long enough through several paragraphs of biological jargon I don't understand is very impressive)!

"Dad, it's the king's soldiers! they're coming this way! What if they find the gold I stole?"
    Missing an uppercase letter

Though, the plant's popularity has grown significantly over the years, being trafficked by Noffet's crime families as a highly-prized recreational drug.
It might just be me but “though” feels out of place- it sets up the expectation of what you’re writing next will be subverted if this makes sense?

to the higher plains of the gods
this formulation feels a bit weird- the higher plains in which the gods live / reside possibly?

The preferred method of using the drug is by smoking it or by turning it into wax and rubbing the body's central points.
    forgot an “it” (I think)

However, Some high-ranking generals profess to ulterior motives, namely the loffia production occupation by deposing Noffet's Moffia.
Would add a “however” at the beginning to mark the opposition better

Many independent farmers attempt to grow some loffia illegally
The sentence feels like it is missing a part- I don’t know the word for it in english, but basically the answer to the question “what?”.

daeymiyon’s revenge: there is an extra [/aloud]

    Structure and Design

My first remark would be that I would switch around the positions of the"Cultivation" section. You go from info / biology, to something uses and history, then to biology again. I think it would be easier to read if it went properties > cultivation > uses > history. Design wise, I personally sometimes struggle with the heavy texture of the background or the bold contrast of the blue box, its a lot to deal with (then again I like simple / clean things, its a question of preference really ^^). You make a nice use of the sidebar by including great illustrations that really fit the theme, with some useful additional information, though it might be easier for the reader if you placed them in a box rather than on the same level as the main text? It would keep the attention from shifting from the main text to the sidebar over and over again.

    Content

Opening Quote: Nice evocative start to the article! It could be a good idea to add a tooltip with possible dates of the prohibition era, provided that you have some in mind.

Introduction: Informative, concise. I would be curious to know more about the alleged creation of the drug- Daemiyon is said to have "presumably" created it, but further down in the history section you present it more as a fact. I think the line between "what people know" and "the actual truth" can be drawn a bit more clearly.

Properties: This section actually starts off by mentioning more biological facts, and only then shifts its focus to the actual properties. I don't think splitting the section would be worth it, and I don't actually have a solution in mind for this, I just thought I'd mention it in case it sparks an idea for you

Uses: Aaah, I love reading about uses! I would be interested in knowing a bit more about the mechanisms behind the industrial use- what type of technology level are we talking about? Are the plants worked by hand, or in giant factories? I'd also love to have more details about the religious uses of the drug- being that it was created by a god, but then banned due to people being at war with said gods, I'm curious to see how the drug would fit in the grand scheme of faith and all that!

Also, you mention that evidence of the drugs being used for religious purposes were found in ruins. What kind of ruins? Of a specific culture, era, type? Temples, farms, random tombs? Overall I'd really enjoy knowing more about what role it had in some cultures and all

[Prohibition:/b] For starters, I don't think I really understand the meaning of the quote. I assume its something along the lines of "you're out of your mind", but maybe a tooltip could clear things up? Also I think it could be good to give a reason to the prohibition: we know who did it and how, but we don't really have any specifics as to why (which in my opinion is the most interesting part). I'm expecting it has something to do with religion, but I would enjoy the extra context :D!

War on Loffia - Album's first civil war: first of all, I would probably suggest picking on of the two titles instead of both. Second of all, I think it could be nice to have a bit more detail on how Noffet used the drugs to their advantage- did they have super drugged soldiers? Use it on their enemies as poison?

Cultivation: Don't have a lot to say apart from nice and informative! I really love the drawing you did of the different sizes of the plant. Maybe a quick tooltip as to who / what lamias are could be nice ^^

Sidebar: I quite enjoyed this section! Its a nice way to delve more into some specifics of the plants, and somehow it feels like getting to know it more intimately, which is nice ^^.

AWESOME CRITIQUE! Thank you so much for taking the time! I definitely got new ideas on how to improve.

    Mar 20, 2021 20:41

Wow, that is one comprehensive plant and the imagery is both impressive and trippy. I also like that you made a list of subspecies. 6 for the price of 1. I can't find any real issues in the article but I do have a few questions out of curiosity. With the electric moon, I feel like the 'electric' part could be more relevant somehow. Does it just give people a light shock? Or can it somehow be used for an energy network? Do the animals that eat the Lofia get high or is it only effective on humans? If they burned down the trees during the civil war, did all the soldiers get high? And how did that god plan on winning through the drug? Do the people become his mindless slaves and they kill people because he orders them to? Or am I overthinking it and did you mean they literally go so insane they try to kill everything in sight? As a god, I would go for the slave thing.

    Mar 21, 2021 02:16 by O4

    I love answering questions!

With the electric moon, I feel like the 'electric' part could be more relevant somehow. Does it just give people a light shock?
Yes, it has a "low electrical voltage" and it's very sparkly as you can see in the gif. I guess those people like the tingle.
Or can it somehow be used for an energy network?
Hmm... good idea. I will have to think about this.
Do the animals that eat the Lofia get high or is it only effective on humans?
Animals like the plant itself, not its fruit. When a loffia flowers they are now longer attracted to it.
If they burned down the trees during the civil war, did all the soldiers get high?
I imagine most of the plants were taken down before flowering, so it had no DML or LZD that would get you high. But maybe some... maybe.
And how did that god plan on winning through the drug?
Humans relied on loffia for their livelihood. It was one angle the gods tried.
Do the people become his mindless slaves and they kill people because he orders them to? Or am I overthinking it and did you mean they literally go so insane they try to kill everything in sight
This is all hearsy from a war that took place forever ago. Can you really trust that it happened?   thank you for your comment!

    Apr 3, 2021 13:16

A really thorough, excellent article. The involuntary short-distance teleportation is one of the best side-effects I think I've read, and the formatting is stellar. Really liked the little icons by every header - that's a great idea. :)

Human and divine interventions have produced numerous different strains for various uses, ranging from industrial to medical to religious
This is real interesting to me, that divine intervention has had a part in shaping the plant and it's strains. It brings to mind Thor's own strain of weed, and amuses me greatly. :D
Daemiyon - the god of thought - presumably created it during the Endless Immortal War to control human minds and turn them against each other.
Now this is also really interesting - how did that work out for him? :)   I love the variant that (might) give you an audiance with a goddess too. That's a great mystical touch (great minds think alike too :D )
Loffia serves as very nutritious food for animals, and it draws many predators.
This makes me wonder - are there animals who use the plant explicitly to get high/get audiences with animal gods? A lot of animals in our own world like to get intoxicated, but not on magical god-touched plants. Lots of fun there!

Thank you for reading and your comment! I'm glad you liked it!   The icons are a test to see if they work with the layout.   Not a lot is (yet) known about the endless war, but it's safe to assume you shouldn't believe everything they tell you about it *wink**wink*   Most animals only eat the plant before it flowers and gains divinity, so it's mostly harmless. Though, there might be one or two special species that dare to try and see what happens.

    Apr 4, 2021 18:43

"Gains divinity" is such a cool phrase. And yeah, I can definitely see that! And I bet those animals would find a use too - kind of like the poison arrow frogs that eat poisonous beetles, then people use them to get poison from.   Very cool :D

Great article and great plant! You article and css are both very pretty :D I love the way it's presented with lots of colour and space, it makes it very attractive and easy to read. And I love all the amazing illustrations you have too!   " The plant achieves its divine appearance with the flowers' blossoming, correlated with the specific strain type and the DML:LZD ratio and percentage." Do you mean that the specific appearance depends on the strain and ratio? Or just that some strain and ratio don't achieve that divine appearance?   I love the details of all the difference strain of the plant and their effect and legality.   " they are fed with shroud. Since shroud protects from the gods' influence, it masks the bright transformation of the flowering" Is it the plant or the farmer that are fed shroud?   " Every crime family has its territory, and each farmer needs a permit to grow." Is that for official farmers too, or only those from the black market? – or wait, in the history section you say only one region in the kingdom can grow loffiat and that that region is divided into section controlled by a crime lord, so that would be the family in question, right? This is just a bit confusing since the history is at the end of the article.   "By utilizing the divine strains' effects" I don't think any of the effect you mentioned would be helpful in a battle, so it would be helpful if you detail what they are here – unless it's referring to the mind control effect?   The link with the gods is upper interesting, as well as the resulting psychic effect of the drug and the history section. You really managed to sprinkle lots of interesting worldbuilding details all over the article :D

    Apr 14, 2021 03:23 by O4

Thank you so much for reading and giving your detailed insight! It's invaluable to me!

Do you mean that the specific appearance depends on the strain and ratio? Or just that some strain and ratio don't achieve that divine appearance?
    Yes, to the first question.
Is it the plant or the farmer that are fed shroud?
The plants lol. Though, it would be interesting if it were the farmers.
Is that for official farmers too or only those from the black market?
Those that do it illegally are trying to evading the crime families' taxation (at the risk of their own lives, one would assume)
I don't think any of the effect you mentioned would be helpful in a battle, so it would be helpful if you detail what they are here – unless it's referring to the mind control effect?
That's actually an excellent point. The theme of my world is mostly mystery. That's why there is partial/incomplete info given. The rest is left for the imagination. That said, I feel like you're right, and not enough clues were given as to the offensive capabilities of the strain. That's why I added a bonus strain and a separate tooltip in the civil war section. I hope this cleared the confusion.   Thank you for helping to improve my article :))

Drugs? Druuuugs? A drug with a divine anti-human origin, even! And I just LOVE the styling and the use of icons!

Hi rikia!   The shear amount of art in your article is already incredible but the really amazing part is that all the art is great (my personal favourites being the animated flowering plant and the anti-laffia poster). The history and divine strains are a nice addition to the content on plant behaviour and usage. My only really note for you is to double check the alignment between your columns - it appears both the "fealty" and "religious" headings are one line too high... pun not intended but is a pleasant side effect. Excellent work!

Thank you for reading and for your comment! I'm glad you liked the art! It was fun creating it :)) I understand what you're saying about the alignment, but I'm not really sure how to fix that. (bbcode/css newbie here)

Without being able to see your 'edit' box, it's tough to explain how to fix it but it really comes down to how you use blank lines or a line breaks (bbcode is [br]) in conjunction with row/col.

If you have the Nutrients and Fealty headers in the same column (i.e. [col][/col] is between the end of the Fealty content and Disease & Pests header), then add either an empty line or line break (br bbcode) between "plants and the swamps' enriched soil." and "Fealty".

If you do [row][col][h#]Nutrients[/h#] ... nutrient content ... [/col][col][h#]Disease & Pests[/h#] ... disease and pest content ... [/col][/row] then [row][col][h#]Fealty[/h#] ... fealty content ... [col][/col] [h#]Shroud - [/h#] ... shroud content ... [/col][/row], then you either need to add a blank line or line break (br bbcode) above the fealty header line, or delete a blank line or line break (br bbcode) above the shroud header line.

Just play with that type of thing while refreshing your page in view mode, and you should be able to figure it out :)
