Enoch Flavius Renfield IV

Archduke of Arkham

Enoch was born into the Venerable House Renfield as a small and rather frail baby. When he took ill with Night Fever, his parents - the Count and Countess of Genova, Kalastrad - exhausted their ability to save their baby. Thankfully, the boy's actual father (Azrael) acted against his typical nature and blessed his son, leading to a full recovery.   In the following years, he grew up in Genova, sheltered from the world. Books and his family's ward, Brie Lewis, were his only companions. He was sick often, but it was during these years that he showed his skill at not only logic, but the arcane. He poured through every book in the family library, far surpassing the abilities of his tutors to keep up. He excelled at reading, writing, and philosophy. He was a master of Chess, Ymlok, and Prophet's Gambit. Soon, his parents were even consulting him on business decisions. Furthermore, he began to study magic, consulting the old tomes to unlock mystical powers long forgotten by his family.   Following the death of his mother when Enoch was a young teen, Enoch's uncle and cousin, Geminus Hildebrand and Cage Renfield respectively, moved in with him. Despite Geminus' best efforts, Enoch began to sneak out of the house, venturing into the nearby city. It was there that he started a street gang called the Rooks. Though no older than fifteen, he commanded some of the toughest men in the city, even toppling some of the stronger gangs by cunning alone.   At sixteen, he completed all the education his tutors could provide and was sent to University in Hadronia City. He graduated in a year and was sent back to his family home. There, he found that his father had died while he was away, thus leaving him as the sole proprietor of his family business, Count of Genova, and the master of the Renfield Estate.   Though he had been a rebellious teen, he rose to the occasion. He also took the opportunity to be guardian over his cousin, Cage. The two had bonded, somewhat over the time they had spent together, and, since Brie had taken off to university, Enoch thought it would be a good opportunity to have some company.   Now in his late teens, Enoch's once frail form grew stronger. He was no longer getting sick all the time, and gained muscle rapidly. At this point, he had begun diving deeper into the arcane and fencing training his parents had neglected for fear he would be hurt. He attributes much of his development to that training, but will always favor mental fortitude to prowess on the field of battle. Still, he likes to keep in shape.   When he was in his mid twenties, Enoch, now settled in as the Count of Genova, was invited to court. It was the fifth year of the reign of Iradin Moore I, and the King had taken notice of the young man. The two grew closer, even going as far as to become genuine friends. This would have been no issue, save the fact it was frowned upon for a sovereign to express open favoritism towards a vassal. With Enoch saving the King from a stray crossbow bolt, that favoritism become more justified. As a reward for saving his life and his loyalty to the crown, Enoch was given the title of Archduke and made the Lord of Arkham, Kalastrad.   Around the same time, Enoch took notice of a lady at court, Angel Lynch. Her rapier wit caught his attention and her beauty enthralled him. She cut through his false ego and was one of the few aristocrats he had ever met that was genuine with him. The two married a year later, Angel moving to Arkham.   He now rules Arkham as one of its best loved sovereigns in ages, co-ruling Carapice with Angel - though they technically had to cede that throne to her sister. Together, the two have a twelve year old daughter,  Gisela, who recently began school at the Arkham School of Gallantry.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Enoch is an athletic, well maintained man. Though he spends the majority of his time reading and playing games, he generally prefers to unwind with physical activity. To describe him as particularly muscled would be to overstate it, but he can certainly keep pace with most.

Body Features

He has a number of scars on his body from when he was a teenager and got into street fights.

Facial Features

He has heterochromia, pointed ears, fangs, and a forked tongue. He tries to hide nearly all of those aspects of himself in one way or another.

Identifying Characteristics

He often wears an eyepatch over his right eye to hide the fact that it is a different color, as heterochromia is superstitiously believed to indicate that your mother was an adulteress.

Special abilities

He is actually a very capable caster, though he rarely gets a proper opportunity to display that skill.

Apparel & Accessories

He wears an eyepatch, as well as what would be considered lower-class garb. Unlike most of the Kalastradi nobility, he doesn't care much for the ostentations of jewels, gold, silver, and fine furs. He likes simple fabrics, leather, and the furs of things he's hunted himself.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Enoch was born frail, but had a miraculous recovery. This literal miracle served to shape much of how he saw the world. His mother was somewhat overbearing, having nearly lost her child, and his father was distant. Enoch always believed his father was simply busy running the county, but came to learn that his father always suspected Soirse of infidelity, regretting that the likely bastard had survived his illness. That, coupled with the death of his mother served to jade the young Enoch, creating a young man that struggled to find emotions when he wanted them and hide them when he didn't.   This came to be one of the main points of self-growth for Enoch as he fought to get himself straightened out. He hid behind a wall of cynicism, sarcasm, and a superiority complex, pushing others away. As he matured and found friends that were able to see through his façade, refusing to let his petty antics keep them from getting at his deepest parts, he grew past that side of himself.   Though he remains a man who struggles to like or even tolerate most people, he is a very genuine man. He is caring and kind, thoughtful and generous. The only caveat is he has to like you first. Still, he has come leaps and bounds from where he was.

Sexuality

Enoch is asexual

Education

He was educated by private tutors until age sixteen, when he went to the Ducal College in Hadronia City, Genova. He received a Graduate's Degree in Arcane History a year later.   After becoming Archduke, he studied First Age Language and received his Professor's Degree.   Three years ago, he completed his research titled On Cosmic Boundaries and the Creatures That Pass Between Them. This exhaustive three hundred page treatise discusses the magics used by various cosmic beings and the ways in which those energies are able or unable to establish connections to the material world; it earned him his Mastery Degree.

Employment

He is currently employed as the Archduke of Arkham.

Accomplishments & Achievements

He has the distinct honor of having saved the King of Kalastrad. Additionally, he is one of the few non-career academics to ever receive a Mastery Degree.

Failures & Embarrassments

Enoch's intelligence is a two-edged blade. It makes him very proficient at what he does, but also makes it difficult for him to relate to others who lack the same experience he has. His has led to him having very few friends, and generally being a diplomatic failure. While he is excellent at the strategic aspects of diplomacy, he is sorely lacking in the social aspects.

Mental Trauma

He has had night terrors since he was a child. Most people he talks to about it say that it's a residual effect of the Night Fever he suffered.   He recently had an encounter with a creature beyond description, the event shaking his hold on reality.

Morality & Philosophy

Enoch is a man who sees the world as a game that can either be won or lost. He has had a deep understanding of how people think and how "the game" works since he was a child. His wife, Angel, and surrogate sister, Brie, have begun to change him over the last few years, but he's still very much a man who believes that either through wit or force he can get his way no matter what. As such, he loves a challenge.   In recent months, he's been shaken to his core by an encounter with a creature beyond his comprehension. This has made him a little less sure of himself and more quick-tempered.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Enoch, ultimately, is motivated by a challenge. He often gets bored of the day-to-day goings on of his life and seeks challenge wherever he can find it. Though his wife and daughter bring him immense joy, he lacks drive. He is motivated by whatever he thinks he'll find enjoyable.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Enoch is a master tactician. This is a skill he applies in most areas of his life, viewing social interactions as engagements that can be strategized. He has dropped this pretense with those he is close with, but, as he trusts few people, he prefers to maximize the positive outcome for himself.   He's also an exceptionally skilled caster. This is owed largely to his divine heritage, but his studious habits don't hurt him, either. Unfortunately, it is a skill few other Nobles, his fellow Kalastradi leaders, understand or respect, so he typically keeps it under wraps that he practices the arcane arts. However, it didn't stop him from writing On Dimensional Boundaries.   As for his shortcomings, he struggles socially. It's not that he's awkward, it's that he doesn't like people. He gets very easily irritated by people and rarely even tells them about it. As a result, there are many people who think him quite the courtly gentleman despite his burning an effigy of them the night before (a joke he often tells his friends - he doesn't actually burn effigies of his enemies).   Similarly, he has problems expressing or even understanding himself. He'll often go into fits of rage or a completely numb melancholy for reasons he can't express. He'll often hide this with an air of superiority to his fellow nobles or fake exuberance to those he cares for, but he rarely is able to shift his actual mood, instead allowing the moment to subside.

Likes & Dislikes

He adores mead. He blames it on his Abian heritage, but he loves it all the same. There's one brewer from Uirsgeul in particular that he paid an exorbitant amount of money to in order to move him to Arkham so that he could have their mead regularly. He also loves a good Baliklavan beer, but mead has his preference.   He dislikes injustices. Though he often comes off cold to others, he cares deeply for those that are taken advantage of and often uses his power as Archduke to try and help those he is able.

Vices & Personality flaws

Enoch judges everyone at face value, believing he is capable of stripping anyone down to their basic parts.

Social

Contacts & Relations

He has many contacts as a result of his history with the Rooks, but they are small scale compared to being the head of House Renfield and the Archduke. House Renfield is known for their shadowy dealings, and that comes with a variety of contacts.   Beyond the professional, he has personal friends in Gilbert Hargrave XMorgan Therian Kraavos, and Magnus Godfrey Redfellow II, all of whom boast connections of their own.

Family Ties

Aside from the ties of his House, he is very close with his in-laws in House Lynch.   He has also made his cousin, Cage, a full member of the Renfields, giving him all that that offers. Unfortunately, the two have largely lost contact. They were quite close when they were younger, but news reached Enoch too late regarding Cage's excommunication. As far as Enoch can tell, Cage has cut him off.   Chief among the people in Enoch's life is Angel. The two have a back-and-forth that confuses many of their fellow nobles. A number of mouths have hung agape after a fiery quip from Angel left them wondering if she'd be struck for insolence. Instead, Enoch will chuckle and fire right back at her. This works for them, though, as they have a very playful relationship laced in quippy banter.   Possibly his greatest tie is to his daughter, Gisela. He loves her like he didn't know possible. There was never really anyone he would die for - an interesting side of his personality - but that changed with Gelisa. He'd live for Angel, but he'd die for Gisela.

Religious Views

Enoch is a bit of a collector of faiths. Though he'd call himself Izaric if asked, he also observes some Dumylan festivals, and is very drawn to the "blissful nothingness" of the Eldritch Church.   As for his actual beliefs he is an Absolutionist. He believes that there is no true religion because the truth is beyond mortal understanding. He says that there is, in fact, one true and right way to live, but that it is incomprehensible. As such, though he certainly recognizes the existence of the gods, he calls into question their nature. It's out of the question that they are powerful beings, but are they divine? Are they actually worthy of reverence and servitude or are they simply beings above the mortal world and not really any different from those that give them praise?

Speech

Enoch may well be one of the only nobles in Kalastrad that speaks with a Túlok accent. Though his family came from Aberia as a part of the Banishing, and thus didn't technically experience the split of Abian culture and development of the two separate Arkan dialects, the accent of his household was definitely bent one direction.   Being raised as an Abian in an Altian world - expected to be Altian in most respects - Enoch will often mix metaphors or say them in the wrong language. This happens most with Arkan and Tesprek, but he has been known to drop in Yugado. He also has an increasing issue with messing up Thepolian, as it is his weakest language.   When he wants to cuss up a storm, he will usually end up speaking Draconic as nearly no one will understand what he is saying.

Wealth & Financial state

First and foremost, he is the single most powerful noble outside of the King. This means that he has a massive amount of wealth and resources. Pair this with his business acumen and clever investments, and he is worth over three hundred thousand Krowns. Though, it should be said that much of this is non-liquid, instead being tied up in lands and various valuables. For instance, his manor is worth forty three thousand Krowns.
