Cage Renfield

(a.k.a. Hawthorne)

Cage was born the only child of Geminus Hildebrand and his first wife. Alas, she died while giving birth to Cage. The boy grew up in his father's mountain palace in *Greish*, Geminus having been granted a palace as a condolence for the passing of his wife. It was a loving home that offered all he needed, but it was a somewhat lonely existence. As the only child around and lacking a mother, he became a bit of a trouble maker, always playing tricks on the palace staff and stealing sweets from the kitchen. Still, he was a generally “good” child.   When he was about eight, his aunt Soirse died, leading to he and his father moving to *Genova* in order to foster Cage's cousin, Enoch. Enoch's father was a very absent parent and the boy needed a firm but loving hand to guide him. Unfortunately, that was difficult to give with the boy constantly sneaking out. Cage admired his cousin, viewing him as more like a brother. Alas, the time was somewhat short lived, as Enoch went to university two years later.   Returning to Greish, Cage developed a fascination with the Elite of the Izaric Church, having seen them in action while in Genova. He read all the books he could get on the Templaric Orders, Exorcist Oaths, and Clerical Cirlces. It all seemed very grand and fantastical, especially to a boy who grew up in the frigid northern mountains. The idea that there people who spent their lives fighting creatures from the Three Hells, backed by the warriors of Illithane the Forge God of the Universe was enough to enthrall Cage beyond just his youth. When Enoch invited Cage to come stay with him again in Genova, he jumped at the chance.   He spent the next six years in Genova, studying at the local parish and soaking in all he could get from the priests. Luckily, Enoch had an even more expansive library, something that Cage put to immediate use. He had memorized the entire Ard Zina well before he was ready to begin his vocation, and had even learned some incantations. When the time came, he was more than ready.   On his sixteenth birthday, Cage was able to choose his vocation and, without a doubt in his mind, chose to be a priest. He blew through the ranks, making *Deacon* by age twenty. It was then that he started his life as an Exorcist. He was a generalist, skilled in combat and spellcraft, but it had always been the grand battle between good and evil that had captured his heart. He heard from another priest that the Izaric Church in *Falgor* had what he was after. Naturally, he left immediately.   On sabbatical, he did, in fact find what he was looking for – and what he needed. Falgor was overrun by monsters. The gloomy landscape was wrought by demons and beasts. If he wanted a fight, they would happily give it to him. He also discovered a new outlook on his faith. The Kalastradi were much less tangible, but here, faced with evil and death, the Falgan believers had a faith you could feel. He embraced his wholly, writing to the Bishop back in Genova.   A few months later, he received a letter from the Archbishop, excommunicating him for heresy. He was outraged, demanding explanation, and all he received in reply was that he had allowed himself to be tainted by a heretical sect.   Now dubbed a heretic, he decided to give himself over completely to the war against the darkness that had overtaken Falgor. This put him directly in the path of a number of Archdemons, one of which decided she'd rather not fight him. A *Sathar*, the demon *Vizenia* was prone to striking deals. She offered one such deal to Cage. She said that, if he swore the *Oath of the Fallen Court* and became a demon caster, she would be his familiar. As he had nothing to lose, he took the deal.   Over the next two years, he and Vizenia tore through hordes of demons together. During this time, he met and married an Exorcist named Jericho. He kept his pact with Vizenia a secret from his wife, not wanting her to learn the truth about his skill as an Exorcist. He feared that she, too would see him as a heretic. Unfortunately, that was a secret he couldn't keep forever.   When Jericho learned of his pact with Vizenia, she was livid. Cage would later learn that it was the secrecy and not the heresy that enraged her, but, in the moment, all he could see was rejection. He didn't wait to be thrown out, he just left, venturing across the *Black Bay* to Uirsgeul, and joining a Guild in *Halidor, Gelisa*. He drank himself broke and sank deep into depression.
