Ideals

Beauty Ideals

For both men and women, the ideal is a fuller body shape.   Men are idealized as having a lot of lean muscle. The expectation is not so much the so-called "Bearmen" of the Dumylan people, but strength is the primary trait that is considered classically attractive. Since a larger portion of the Abian population is Human than other races, there is no particular expectation of beards, and it is more a matter of personal taste, but, when a beard is had, it is typically kept at a medium length. Men also tend to keep their hair either short or to their shoulders. It's not typical to have it longer.   Women are preferred to have a curvy figure. The ideal is a more-or-less flat stomach with strong legs and butt. They like to exude the appearance of being good mothers, while also maintaining some aspects of "looking the maiden". Long hair is preferred, and there is typically a lot of time put into adding decorative braids, often with wood or metal beads.

Gender Ideals

The Abian people idealize family. As a result, there is an expectation that father and motherhood are just a matter of time.   Men are expected to provide food and shelter for their families - a challenge with the rarely stationary life of the typical Abian. As such, men are idealized as being jacks of all trades, being able to fix a wagon, patch a tent, and kill and prepare a deer. They are the literal homemakers.   Women, meanwhile are expected to be mothers, caring for an raising their children. They are responsible for their children's education, as well as their protection. This is enabled by the husband ensuring that the basic needs are met. It's for this reason that mothers are so honored in the Abian culture.

Courtship Ideals

Since Abian culture is defined by its migratory nature, the nomadic tribes are very close knit, and typically made up of six to ten families, generally with at least three living generations. As a result of this, romantic endeavors are a group issue. While there are not arranged marriages in Abian culture, individuals are limited in their choices for partners, and thus often get paired up by others. That said, there is no rule that a spouse needs to come from within the tribe.
