Character Building: Dungeons & Dragons 5E

Building a playable character in the Realm of Beardsgaard is much like building a standard D&D character, with a few key differences. Classes and Backgrounds all come from standard 5E, many of which can be altered to the setting with the GM (gods, locations, flavor details, etc).   One of those differences is that we thought that in real species, there should be certain traits and skills that would be granted by the place a character grew up, rather than their species (Darkvision, weapons trainings, things like that). These will be granted to you by the kingdom you come from, as well as some extras from the GM based on your character's backstory in the Realm.   Because we wanted to make even the gods and elementals playable, but balanced for their settings, the GM provides a roster of species available for a given campaign. That also means that there will be some of the less humanoid species available to play, but in tailored settings.   There are 9 Prime species in the Realm (found below), one of which had a natural mutation that led to another small species (Gnomes are an offshoot of Dwarves, Gnomes+Humans=Halflings). As those species combined, Legacy Species were created.   On each Prime Species page, you will find their Prime Traits and a Legacy Trait. To make a Legacy Species, choose which of your parent species you take after more, then take the Stats and Prime Traits of that parent species, and the Legacy Trait of the other parent species.
