My March Marathon

I have to admit, when I first heard about the March of 31 Tales, my inclination was to pass. Twice a year I already put in a solid month of worldbuilding, and the time between Summer Camp and WorldEmber is about what it takes to recover.   Then I saw these beautiful badges.

All of a sudden I needed them. (Hi, I'm The Big G, and I'm a badge hoarder.) And I get to put them there because I DID IT. I wrote an article every day, or an article's equivalent. To avoid wearing myself out, I decided my goal would be just 200 words per day.   (Who's laughing? I hear that!)   I just did the math and I WROTE MORE WORDS IN MARCH THAN I DID FOR WORLDEMBER.   Honestly, it wasn't any easier. I fell into the same old pattern of scribbling ideas in a notebook, struggling to assemble them into coherent thoughts, and sitting up sometimes hours past my bedtime to complete and post the day's article. Daily writing is a fine habit for those it helps, but it's not sustainable for me. (This is not a complaint. I knew what would happen and I chose it anyway. I don't regret a word of what I did this month and if the challenge runs again next year with badges as good as these...I might end up doing it again.)   Anyway, since March of 31 Days is a community challenge with no official hub, I'm copying what others are doing and listing the month's articles here. Not in chronological order--they all say April 1 because I had to re-tag everything--but roughly by topic.

Former Wringers

Water Seekers are the nearest thing in my world to magic users. They're mostly well-respected...except for the Wringers. They were on the villain's side once, and even though they were young and it's been thirty years, the world still isn't quite ready to trust them.

Other Water Seekers

Here are a few of the newer generation of Seekers, without that shady past.

More about water manipulation

This challenge presented a good opportunity to expand on some of the details of how the water "magic" in my world works.

Aspects of Tiderider culture

While checking some older articles, I noticed that there were a few concepts I kept mentioning that I hadn't actually written about. Fixed that!

Updates

I checked with Demongrey and got the OK to update old articles as long as I add my minimum wordcount. So when I found myself linking to outdated articles, I took the opportunity to fix them up.

Miscellaneous

Plan? Nah, I didn't have a plan. Some days an article was just an old stub or a random thought.

And finally...

We Will Not Go to the Mountain
Myth | Apr 1, 2025

A silly children's play teaches that long journeys are made of a series of short ones.

I had this idea on day 1. For March 31st I wanted to write about something that embodies the idea of plugging away, of reaching a goal one step at a time. Out of everything I wrote this month, this article is my favorite because it was my mountain.

Thank you! And thanks also for prodding me to publish my drafts.

Thank you! It was a struggle indeed, but 100% worth it. These were articles I've needed for a long time. (Most of those Wringers didn't even have names beforehand!) I also learned I really can write an article a day, so there's no excuse for me to be wrapping up five or six at once in the last hour before the Summer Camp ending stream. XD
