fire handler
Fire handlers are specialized technicians trained in how to generate, control, contain, and extinguish flames.
Perception
Social Status
Due to the inherent hazards of their work, fire handlers are respected but also slightly feared.
History
The profession of fire handling arose out of the shipboard role of "fire guard" during the early Oceanic Era. Crewmembers took round-the-clock shifts tending the boat's fire as well as keeping anything from igniting that wasn't supposed to. By the time humans settled in the Cluster Islands, solar ovens and flame pumps had already made constant firetending obsolete. Once geothermal energy became widespread, open flame came to be seen as more dangerous than necessary, and fire handlers are now employed only when there is no reasonable alternative.
