Capriseaux Sea (Cap-ree-SO)

A large warm sea that forms the coastline of the continent of Alkay . The Capriseaux is known for long beautiful coastlines, tropical islands, foreboding swamps, and nations of fine arts, dark magics, and high society.

Geography

The Capriseaux is an oceanic sea, separated from the Ahventiel Ocean by the scattered island chains. The waters are consistently warm, and home to a large number of colorful coral reefs. Islands and archipelagos are scattered across the sea, most of them relatively small.

History

For most of its history the Capriseaux was home to many tribes of elves, lizardfolk, ogres, and grippli. The doreen nomads swam through the Capriseaux, warring with sahugain, and trading with the mainlanders and the Mer nations. When the Age of Expansion swept over the Midlands, the Capriseaux attracted many of the colonizers from Avienne and Corteso. These colonists at first variously traded with or fought the natives, with the colonization of Maircage and Durand becoming known as the Wetland Wars. In the end, the natives of Durand were pushed back into the Everflow, while those in Maircage retreated further into the swamps. In Puertovela the local elves seemed to vanish, while the ogres were either killed or subjugated.   The colonies were largely left alone in their early days, scattered about the shores and islands of the Capriseaux Sea far from Helvenia. The resources discovered brought merchant interest in many Midland nations. The hodge-podge nature of the settlement led to many early border fights, and birthed an era of piracy unmatched in any other time. The Midlands nations remained very standoffish towards the colonies, increasingly taking less interest in running or maintaining them, yet putting on increased demands for resources as wars and expansion in Helvenia demanded it. As this continued, the colonies on the Capriseaux began to find more in common with each other than their home nations, eventually not even taking part in the wars back east.   Things came to a head when the colony of Maircage refused to supply a particularly large amount of money and resources for the war effort against Corteso in the Foothill War. The Minister of Maircage, backed by the people of the colony, declared the land independent. As Avienne mounted a small force to take the land, Maircage called in favors from allies around the Capriseaux. What began as one small colony's rebellion turned into a four year war, ending with the colonies joining together in a naval war of independence. In the end the colonies won their freedom, playing the Midlands countries against each other to make retaking the Capriseaux too expensive for any of them. The day of independence is marked by a shared celebration throughout the region known as "The Surrender".
