Durand

Lying south of the Grey Mountains from The Imperial Republic of Addam is Durand; a subtropical land of beaches, rivers, and wetlands. The territory's plantations grow tobacco, cotton, and tropical fruits, and the vineyards are legendary.

Assets

The beaches here are renowned for the white sands and blue water, and have drawn the eyes of bards and artists for generations. Apart from the beaches, the region is mostly composed of wetlands and plantations. The plantations of Durand produce crops found in few other lands. The sugar and tobacco plantations are especially famous, producing most of the world's supplies. While Durand has been less enthusiastic in embracing industrial techniques, they were the first to apply them to consumable goods. Now Vigors from Durand are sold worldwide, the mystic tobacco products providing an ever increasing amount of benefits for "the gentleman smoker".

History

As Addam was settled to the north by Yorlish explorers, Durand was colonized by humans from the Elven dominated nation of Avienne. Arranged as a place for the humans and half-elves to enjoy self-rule (or get them out of the country depending on who you listen to), the colony joined with the other Capriseaux Sea nations in a war for independence.   While they boasted one of the stronger navies in the world, Helgest's planar invasion completely bypassed them, creating a Scar in central Durand linked to the paraelemental plane of ooze. While they were never fully taken over, the people of Durand spent most of the war fighting defensive battles and trying to regain land and sea routes. With the war over, they welcomed the aid in rebuilding that Addam offered. But somewhere along the way, aid turned into occupation.   Now the people are torn between becoming a territory of their old ally, or fighting for independence. As yet there is no united front. Durand's royal family were mostly killed in the war, and the last prince died a hero in the Resolution. Many of the common people are fond of the innovations and hope for a better life with the Empire, while others fear losing their own ways, or becoming cogs in Addam's machinery.

Demography and Population

Durand is mostly human, though there is a substantial half-elven population, and a healthy halfling minority. The larger cities are incredibly cosmopolitan, with a much more diverse population.   The interior of Durand is the domain of elves, the originally people of the land. There is also a native lizardfolk population, and wetlands folk who keep away from the colonized areas.

Foreign Relations

Durand has a long history with Avienne, and with the other nations of the Capriseaux. As Addam comes to dominate the politics, Durands ties are becoming superseded.
