Season 4, Episode 8: "The Horseman of Pestilence" Report
General Summary
The Dream Team broke camp, diving deeper into the Ikal Expanse, headed for Caliria Maze. While on the boat ride, the group outfitted Flay with the gear of the future, and filled her in on the strange energies that suddenly surrounded her. While hesistant to make commitments, Flay decided to stay with the party for now, eager to check on the clan's deity, Unari Dama.
Upon reaching the edge of the Maze, the Dream Team left their vessel behind, and began to navigate the overgrowth that reigned supreme in that part of the jungle. They encountered several terrified wildlife, including a rampaging Yaruk and a flock of Sky Fishers -- the latter of which surrounded the corpse of Sarge's ship. After warding off the wildlife, Lockette took the opportunity to convert the starship to Dragonglass (specifically a Tier 8 piece).
Diving deeper, the crew started to encounter the Cult of the Devourer, which had been using their technological advantage to wipe out the Khizar guarding Caliria. Horrified, Mist put his new Phasecaster to use on the cultists, while Chamas displayed powers oddly similar to that of a Vanguard... The Lashunta denied any changes to his combat training, and urged the group forward as a flash of silver flame broke the darkness of the jungle floor.
Soon the Dream Team found themselves at the heart of Caliria, where Unari Dama was locked in a cosmic battle against the Horseman of Pestilence. But the creature was not alone, for Sarge had just finished taking out the Khizar's shaman, and was holding a remote capable of controlling his ally... Abelina Tremont, warped into a monster by her grandfather's experiments, her eyes filled with Wither, and no recognition for her friends.
Chamas made a desperate choice, finally excepting the boons of the System, awakening the power latent inside him, and beginning an Epic Encounter. The mercenary went toe-to-toe with Sarge, guided by a Challenge, while Flay targeted Apollyon for similar reasons, and the rest of the crew assigned themselves to cleanup, and capturing Abelina.
Of note, Lockette put two new drones to work, Bona-Bee and Beatrix, healing the party and offering interference against the cultists. Tesin and Isra worked on annihilating the surrounding Wither Wraiths, and Cornelius revealed the secrets of his lesser Mantle (see Mantle of the Twisted Soul).
Flay took a massive hit from the Horseman, which she returned directly into the creatures spine, severing a biological component lodged into the aspect's body, and the rest of the crew dogpiled onto the creature until the apparation returned to its home plane. Meanwhile, Chamas completed his challenge, fully embracing the gifts of the System, and accepting his destiny as a Vanguard. After removing Sarge's entrails from his body, he turned to focus on Abelina, but the Technomancer followed her new programming, and teleported back to Aucturn before she could be captured.
As things settled, the Dream Team got a proper introduction to Unari, who used the head of the last Quig to replace the aspect of Pestilience, which he was using to power the unnatural growth of the Ikal Expanse. In return, he gifted the party a potent Elixir of Life from the streams at the heart of Caliria, along with a White Flame from the depths of the Demon's chambers. It was gifted to his doting servant, Flay, who gained the Mantle of the White Flame upon absorbing the energy. Although devastated by Abelina's transformation, the crew confirmed that Chamas had been given a Mantle after defeating Sarge, known to the System as the Mantle of Odium.
After tying up a few loose ends (like Mist visiting his mom!) Unari opened the Fold Gate in Caliria, allowing the group (including Flay) to take their starship straight back to Ezorod, and unlocking swift travel to the planet in the future. While most decided to rest, Lockette and Mist decided to complete the BRANCH API Hub, using the Blessing of the Sunmaiden to power it, and thus the Dream Team faded into lands of data and dreams...
