A Wild Feline Ysoki from Castrovel, Balio was uninterested in living life in the jungle. He Knew travel off his planet was possible and sought it for most of his young life. He made his way off his dangerous planet by sneaking away on the ship of a few mercenaries working for the Lashunta.
After years of living life by the skin of his teeth, he saved enough and had made enough allies to form a small gang known as The Maelstrom. They fought their way up the ranks, doing jobs and losing members until they gained enough Credits and favors to buy a ship named after their gang. Balio and his crew sailed through the stars, doing jobs to make money and grow their ship and group. They were large and full of themselves and took on a job to steal encrypted data from the Barathu. This would be the Maelstrom's demise.
The Barathu chased them through the stars to a place known as The Divide. There, the Barathu set an ambush for the Maelstrom and laid siege to the ship. Most of her crew died immediately, and any that took an escape pod were either blown out of existence or captured. Balio was injured in the initial attack, losing his leg as a result but he would not let any have his ship. He took what he could from her databanks and set the beloved ship to self destruct.
Slowed by his missing limb, he nearly didn't make it to the escape pods. The Barathu waiting for him there didn't help. In a quick and dirty battle, Balio caused one of the pods to jettison without the airlock closing, dragging the Barathu out. This caused the ship to begin collapsing and by the time he made it into the last escape pod, she was already exploding. Balio lost his ear and nearly his eye to the Barathu and his arm to the airlock slamming shut just before the Maelstom finished her final cacophonous roar, taking out multiple Barathu ships in her wake and sending Balio flying out into unknown space.
He was able to, just barely, make it to a small settlement and get patched up using the escape pods medical chamber to keep himself alive. Over the course of the next year or so Balio ran from the Barathu chasing him, gaining a fully mechanical arm leg and ear and a few allies. But the Barathu are smart and many. They once again laid siege to his place of refuge, killing his allies and taking him to their prison, The Sauna where Balio is to this day, planning his escape.

Secret Unlocked: Brother to the Storm

Every since he was a child, Balio has been able to detect the presence of storms. He can feel when they are approaching, unerringly point to their eye, and often senses their passing well before a clear sky is in sight. As he grew older, this ability manifested itself similarly in times of great chaos, like a shroud of entropy covering the battlefield. In rare moments, he sees the Skinny Men among all the noise. These paper-white figures look emaciated in their priceless suits, but otherwise take on a variety of features. Of note, all Skinny Men have smooth skin where their eyes should be, and a burn mark the shape of a thumb print in their forward.
Of note, the Skinny Men saved Balio during his escape from the Barathu, when the valve on his pod cracked. It is unclear what the creatures' true intentions are, but Balio feels a malevolent aura in their presence.
