The end of all that was, the beginning of all that is
This timeline organizes the separate chronology of events in the western continent. These events are largely isolated from European historical development.
A time of perpetual night and endless winter, of tainted earth and water: the Age of Poisoned Sea and Sky nearly ended the human race and finished the genocidal work of the original Cataclysm . Whatever the exact nature of the great Cataclysm, the trauma of that disaster left a legacy of death the effects of which are still being felt in some parts of the world to this day. The Outlands of Merika are a good example of the kind of harshness referred to in legends passed down concerning the aftermath of the Cataclysm. The only way that the Cataclysm’s survivors and their progeny managed to endure the blighted aftermath was to take refuge deep beneath the surface of the Earth. Wherever untainted water could be found, life could be supported. Men and women that could secure such clean water resources were fortunate. Most initial survivors were certainly not so lucky. To this day the tunnels of the survivors and their underground refuges can still be found. The ancient habitations in and beneath Paris’s old metro tunnels served as just such a refuge, though it is extremely rare to find people still living in such places, as was the case in Paris, so long after the end of the Age of Poisoned Sea and Sky.
The Post-Cataclysmic Era marks the beginning of a true historical period in which renewed literacy allows written records to preserve knowledge of events beyond living memory. During this time the blight of the poisoned sea and sky began to abate. Plants and animals began to flourish upon the surface of the earth. Humans soon followed and established settlements among the ruins of the Precursor civilization which their ancestors had been forced to abandon. This period is shrouded in myths about the precise nature of the world's revival. Legends of gods and other supernatural beings abound in the culture stories of the Renewal. Common to these stories on a global scale are the recurring tales of Visitors who emerge throughout the Age of Renewal. These Visitors are described as teachers and healers who guided the progress of humanity out of its darkened shelters and back to civilization.
