Trinity Settlement in In the Shadow of Princes | World Anvil

Trinity

Mystic refuge of the White Sand cults

Trinity is unusual even for a frontier town. The village has no notable industry; what growing soil there is to be had is good but the arable land is limited by the swampy nature of the landscape. Most of the settlers here were drawn by the allure of the many myths and legends that suffuse the history of Trinity, which is something of a pilgrimage destination for people of myriad faith traditions. Most of the spiritual customs associated with Trinity are related to the Trinity Cauldron, a pump station and reservoir constructed by the Visitors in the early years of the Age of Poisoned Sea and Sky.

Demographics

Trinity was largely populated by a community of young misanthropes with a spiritual bent. Among these were some families with small children. Though most of the villagers were adherents of the Church of the Exploding Eye, mystics of many spiritual traditions once gathered here. All members of the community were like-minded in the sense that they were pursuing a better life through the practice of total religious freedom.

Government

The population of Trinity was led by a Merikan ex-pat named Ottmer. He was the First Brother of the Exploding Eye cult and filled the role of spiritual and civic leader for his flock of brethren. He led in the fashion of "chief council" in that he would approve or defer decisions made by the community as a collective. Though Ottmer held final executive decision-making powers, he sought to refrain from making proposals and instead allowed his Brothers and Sisters to create their own governing policies.

Ottmer was removed from power when Vril Badlanders occupied the village. The invaders had intended to destroy the Trinity Pump Station, but Ottmer, self-appointed guardian of the station, sealed it off and refused to explain how to unlock it. In spite of grievous tortures, Ottmer resisted the will of the Vril war chief, The Butcher. For this, Ottmer suffered horrible torments and died.

The village is now run by Vril war parties that pass through on their way to the war zones of the Pachuco Jungle. The original residents have been enslaved and made to provide provisions to maintain Vril supply lines.

Defences

Prior to the capture of Trinity, a small force of Pachuco bravos occupied the town and prepared meager defences (pallisade walls, ditches, bamboo punjis) which have by now been dismantled.

Infrastructure

Aside from the ancient Cauldron pump station, the only infrastructure works in the village are a dilapidated boat launch and an old wooden bridge that spans the Cauldron reservoir en route to the hills of the White Sand Mountains. The followers of the Exploding Eye cult are not the most enterprising types, and have produced little in the way of technical improvements.

Guilds and Factions

The only organized faction operating in Trinity is the Church of the Exploding Eye, which maintains a temple here and basically controls the village (or at least used to control it).

Architecture

There is an ancient Pachuco temple here that was once devoted to the sun god Ormaz. The temple was abandoned during the Southern Jungle War when the Pachucese deserted their northern settlements. This temple has been converted into a Church of the Exploding Eye and it's the only stone building in the inhabited section of the village. The rest of the settlement is constructed out of wattle and dub mud huts with thatch roofs. Some of these have been burned and the rest are currently occupied by Vril warriors. The former residents of the village (those that are still alive) have been made to dig a pit which is now their prison. They are penned within the 10 foot pit and locked under a bamboo lattice lashed with jungle vines.

Geography

Trinity Village is located near the foothills of the White Sand Mountains. Directly north of the village there is a dry plain of white sand that emerges unexpectedly at the edge of a steep slope. The terrain around the village is mostly composed of marshy jungle especially around the Cauldron reservoir. The villagers have made an effort to plant crops in intermittent locations wherever suitable sections for planting can be identified. There is a rocky ridge extending south from the mountains that rises directly above the reservoir. Atop the Precursor-built Water Wall constructed next to the reservoir there is a flattened jungle plateau that overlooks the entire village and provides a decent view of the surrounding jungle terrain.

Natural Resources

The only resource worthy of note here is the fresh water provided by the pump station. Since the station is inactive even that resource has now been diminished making Trinity a meager settlement indeed.
