A new political movement undermines state independence

The peace won in the Retribution War fails to bring about the prosperity promised by President Marcus. If anything, the end of the Hidden Empire removes the need for the Confederacy's mutual defence pact: one of the most significant reasons for the old Confederacy's existence.   The new Merikan nationalism emerges as a product of nativist paranoia and technoclastic hysteria. The restless peoples of the Confederacy are torn by the nascent conflict, which threatens to dissolve the old order and through the states into a civil war.
